    R&R 318i Track Car - S50, itbs, cams, 5-lug, etc.

Haven't posted much in these last few years, but figured I'd give you guys some teaser/parts spread pics.

About 4-5yrs ago I picked up this 1991 318i w/ 219K non-running for $800. Replaced the crank position sensor and it fired right up. Did some light suspension mods, new seats and some other minor stuff and drove it around for about 10K miles.

Toyed with selling it for a while, but eventually decided against it. Ended up picking up a parts car '94 325is and swapping the M50TU & getrag 250 in. Also did an E36 M3/ti 5-lug swap at that point. Drove it around for around another 5K and toyed with selling it again.

Decided against it again. Ripped out the interior, threw in a VSR 4pt. rollbar w/ removable center section, Recaro SPG seats and Sabelt 5pt. harnesses. Moved to using it for track days instead the E34 S50 5-speed wagon and Turbo M42 car. So here is as it sits now (minus the MHW's):

So I decided the car needs some more upgrades still to enjoy it for track days. So I started off by picking up a 120K mile Late-95 S50US. Then I bought these items:

    - BMP Re-branded (Dbilas) M50/S50 ITB Setup
    - JBRacing Ultralight Flywheel/3 disc 5.5" clutch w/ custom throwout bearing - Total rotating mass = 11lbs!
    - S52 Cams reground to Sunbelt sport specs

Here is the other stuff that will be done along with these items:

    - Diffsonline 40% 3-clutch 3.46LSD (already in car)
    - ZF Swap w/ AKG Race Shifter & DSSR
    - New Lifters & Titanium Valve spring retainers (set rev limit at 7400rpm)
    - Raceland SS Euro replica headers w/ dual 2.25" to single 3" Merge, 304SS 3" to tailpipe
    - Custom rear brake softlines, Machined Z4 rotors & modified caliper carrier bracket in order to use E36 M3 rear calipers on Ti rear braking setup to balance Front/Rear braking bias
    - CSS Poly engine mounts, raised subframe mounts
    - Custom Lolipops to increase caster for E36 5-lug swap
    - Reinforced front & rear subframes

That's it for now, although I'm thinking about playing around with suspension (Koni SA's and GC's) and doing a real 6 point rollcage just for safety's sake. I've got some 235/40R17 BFG R1s that should be up for track duty as well, but would be nice to get flares and stuff some 255/40-17's under there. o_O

Still gathering parts and trying to find the time/energy to work on it, but it should be coming along soon. Opinions/Comments/Criticisms welcome.

    WIN!

You can't get rid of an E30. It it like that Simpsons' episode when Homer gets a hair transplant from Snake and it takes over his mind. The E30 is like Snake.

Hahaha, absolutely Fred! Originally I wanted to go S54 (your build was one that inspired me), but decided to keep the costs down.

Now I've spent almost as much for a nice S54 w/ accessories!

Exactly I have my eye on a nice S54 with low mileage but I think I would be castrated if I did that vs finishing the bathroom.

My dad and I just moved from a warehouse to a much smaller shop for just our projects. Still have plenty of stuff to move in, but the lift is up and the large pallet shelving towards the back is there. 2880sq. ft. with a nice little office (for motorcycle and more parts storage).

The daily '89 325i, complete in winter attire (snow tires and roof rack for skis).

1970 Yale 4000lb. LPG Lift truck. Sat for 5yrs at work, replaced the starter and the propane lines and it fired right up. Solid machine, but has a hydro leak and the brakes/controls suck.

Lift is now up where this trailer is.

                '70 2500 and '98 318ti.

Umm, yeah... Top left: 2002 complete f/r suspension with IE springs, bilstein sports, urethane bushings. Middle Right: about 6 different various transmissions. Bottom for Left to right: S50US (going in the track car), M52B28 for the 318ti, 2.2 stroker M10, M20B25, M52B25. I need to stop hoarding parts.

This is one of the reasons why I can't seem to find time to work on anything. :-/

Sweet shop space! That dbilas setup looks pretty nuts. Glad to hear you're going to install hot cams, because IIRC the dbilas throttles are pretty large for a non-cammed setup.

Thank you sir. It's pretty close to the I-91/95 Interchange in CT, so PM if you're in the area and want to swing by.

Yeah I am psyched to put it to use. Dbilas claims 30+hp (crank probably) on a stock M50, but I have my doubts. Obviously cams will make it that much more potent.

I am a little concerned with the regrinds however. From what I've read some people have had great success with them, while others have had some mishaps. I'm concerned with overextending the hydraulic lifters due to the reduced base circle. Have the specs from the PO, but will measure them and take a look. If not, I'll have to buy some from VAC or scour the BFC classifieds.

Thanks! I'm trying to get my 2500 running/driving for spring, but I should have updates for the track car in a few weeks.

Uh oh, what have I done?

Just picked up this '98 M Roadster tonight with 140K on the clock. Going to grab the rear trailing arms instead of going for the custom setup that I listed earlier, and will probably go S52 instead of S50!

                              Absolutely LOVE it. Something about a clean '91 318i/4 .... :D

Also really cool to see a 318i/4 track car! Don't see this everyday!

Kudos, and keep up the cool/good work.
