    89 325is Overhaul

I just joined the forum, so this is going to be an intro and build thread. I have been into cars forever. I am a 17 (2 weeks until 18 ) year old punk that has a need for speed (ask my insurance company :nice: ). I built a 1989 jeep wrangler 6 cylinder swap, 5 speed, lift etc. I wheeled that for a year and blew the trans up recently. I still have the jeep, but it is now on the back burner.

I have always had a fond liking for e30's, so I am always looking to get a cheap project. Well for a very, very good price, I picked up this gem.

I will not mention the price but you guys can guess and enlighten me of how good of a deal I got . It is a 89 (my year I guess) 325is. Currently taken apart. The entire interior is with the car, just not in it. 120k miles on an m20 that was allegedly rebuilt at 100k mated to an automatic trans (that will be swapped soon). No rust or rot to be found on the car. Every panel is original, the body is pin straight. Factory Alpine white paint, which is not terrible, but the hood does need a respray, as there is five or six stone chips over the years.

The reason the car was a steal is because it is clearly taken apart, but all of the parts come with the car. The guy I bought it from was going to strip and make it into a rat (not my thing) and kept all the of the stuff. He lost interest so it was time to sell it. The top end is off of the motor currently. He gave me all of the stuff for the car including new water pump, fuel pump, new arp head bolts, all new mann filters, timing belt kit with tensioner, all new gaskets for the top and bottom end, and many other things. One flaw with the motor is this:

I did some prior research and saw that some people have just JB welded it in the past, which is what I am going to do as a temp fix. I would like to get the car in full mechanical order before ordering an IE cam. Just cant justify spending almost what I paid for on the car on a cam. Really, the only thing that the car needs is the carpet which does not come with the car, and the bumpers which I am going to try and straighten and run it the for the time being. I will be looking high and low for a set of good used ones. So if anyone has a set or know of somebody let me know.

After getting a good reliable runner here is my plan:
Lowered about 1.5 inch with a little bit of rake
poor mans stroker, ie cam, injectors etc, with a possible turbo build at the same time :-D
cat delete with a muffler (unsure of which one yet)
cut and buff, and possible entire paint for the car if it doesnt clean up well
bbs (or a knock off set, yet I don't want to be a poser)
    smoked headlights

Well that is all I have for now. I pick up the car tomorrow (perfect mothers day present ) I will be updating this thread constantly, so yeah.

    Brought it home today.

Made it home in one piece. Well now the fun begins :D

Started to take all of the stuff out of it and seeing what I do and do not have.

The intake was powder coated, which really makes me made because it is such a terrible color. I do not like it at all. If anyone wants to trade me, pm me, but kinda doubt it will happen. Looked like majority of the interior stuff was in the car, along with all of the engine parts. I got all sorts of stuff, which was made the deal even sweeter.

The interior was my first plan of action, as I am waiting on cam pin. Got both of the rear kick panels in and realized that the front seat belts went behind them so I had to take them off and put them back on. No biggie, just was frustrating.

Once that was done, the rest was pretty much straight forward. Front seats bolted in, along with the center console. I do need to figure out what bracket
mounts to the lower seat belt. Anybody have insight on that?

After a few hours of labor, I achieved this

The HVAC stuff isn't in because I need to figure out which cables go to the appropriate controls. So after that was done, I moved on to the grille and lights

Again not a fan of the orange, or even the white painted grille, but nothing a $5 can of paint wont fix.

Cleaned her up with a quick wash, and it looked decent. Then moved it into the garage and called it a night. Should have it running and driving in the week or so.

Yea, it is quite bad. I didnt and still dont understand the styling concept that the PO had in mind, but it was his idea and his car at the time. Just started to take off the exhaust manifolds, so i can take the head out and clean that put before i put the new head gasket in. Snapped only one stud so far. got almost all of them at out except one on each manifold. They are almost impossible to get to. And the nuts and studs seem to be original, so a 6 point is a must. The two that I am stuck on, I cannot get a ratchet on them, so I need to pick up a 6 point 12mm box tomorrow. Hopefully I can get that taken care of early tomorrow and then I can can get the top of the head finished.

For the stud that I broke, I am going to weld a nut to the broken stud, head up the aluminum, and then slowly see if it will budge. If not I can always bring it to my uncle who will machine it out. No pictures tonight, I am sure all of you have seen crusty exhaust manifolds and they are nothing worth wild. Will have another update for tomorrow.

It is terrible. The add didn't have pictures and the ones he showed me didn't have the grille in them so I asked about it. He then showed me a picture of the white grille. I had a hard time keeping my lunch down. But for right now that is the way it is going to be because I want to get it running and driving and make sure everything works before I start making it look better.

So I got the head off today. Was hoping it was in better shape but here is the truth

So I am going to get the head resurfaced at the very least. I will probably get a valve job at the same time, but cannot decided whether it is worth it to get the oversized valves. Any input?

Here is the broken stud and the other nut that is hold on the other manifold

As you can see, it is pretty well rounded. So I think I am just going to cut it off with a cut off wheel and then just weld a nut to the rest of the stud. I have all new studs and nuts to go in anyway.

got it running yesterday. runs well minus the fuel pump which died on me. getting one from guten tomorrow. ordered it for me without a deposit or any sort of payment. totally cool guys down there. love taking a trip to their shop and seeing all of the stuff they have. my goal is to have it on the road before the holiday
