    e30brah's 318i build thread

    Hey guys,

Thought it was time for a thread.

I've got two 318's (take note, plural) - one is currently my daily driver, whilst the other is either set to take the track/be a fun run around car unless I opt to sell it (which seems more likely).

I'll skip straight to the pics so we're on the same page.

This won't be an incredibly fast build, but I've got a pretty straight forward plan of what I'm looking to do - only working on these cars on a budget and locating cheap parts in Australia isn't particularly easy considering the e30 scene is much smaller here.

    Some info on the cars:

    Silver 1990 318i
    - Electric sunroof/manual windows
    - Cloth interior, interior is quite nice, woodgrain steering wheel
    - iS lip
    - No Euro trim
    - No foglights
    - No rear speakers or stereo
    - Auto
    - Lowered, on stock shocks by PO
    - 14" Bottlecaps, soon to be replaced by factory BBS RZ
    - Resprayed 7 or so years ago, looks gorgeous cleaned up
    - No rust

    Diamond Schwartz 1989 318i
    - First e30, very clean, no rust
    - Paint is very nice, however it needs a good buff as there is a considerable amount of scratches
    - Practically stock
    - Electric windows/manual sunroof
    - Manual

The initial plan was to drive the schwartz one, however, I found the silver at a steel and have picked that up for the daily driver. The initial portion of this build thread will be repairs for the schwartz including front bumper which is cracked, buffing, fitting an iS lip, lowering, repainting trim and lowering.

The silver will be kept, hopefully I can source some nicer leather interior cheaply, get a stereo in, and speakers as well as (the wiring has been cut in the rear speakers, for for now I will have dummy speakers in, but may eventually rewire - still has front speakers). And I'll look to purchase some use koni adjustables or bilsteins since I don't want to blow the stock struts.

So we begin the journey, I'll have more pics soon as I progress on - hopefully this thread acts as a good learning experience and motivates me to get off my ass and do some work!

So, after a long delay in updates; I have a big list of updates to attend to!

I have since sold the diamond schwartz e30 (I miss her!), and held onto the sterling silver which I have been slowly upgrading.

Threw some 14" BBS RZ on it

      This happened today

Mum took the car to the mechanic because I was at work and the splitter must have hit the gutter of the driveway and ripped the lip off and smashed it. I've sourced a new iS lip and will need to have it resprayed and remount the splitter.

Current status: Just swapped in a new thermostat and did a coolant flush, it's leaking from the radiator or expansion tank it appears and I'll need to wait on the mechanic to give me some news before I decide whether it needs a new radiator.

Check the o-ring on the expansion tank
          We're out there in here.

Yeah, I think that might be the problem too; there seems to be coolant around there.

It's at the mechanic now, waiting on his call..

Turns out expansion tank has a split in it and heater core is leaking.

I'll get around to fixing this in a couple of weeks! Sucks, but that's life!

                  Here come the r3v purists.

I bought the car like this, and honestly it doesn't affect me that much.

I have respect for what others choose to do to their cars; and I do like black trim but I rather not waste the money on something that isn't necessary.

I really like the painted mouldings! Not sure if it would work with any colour other than silver (white doesn't) but it makes the E30 look light years more modern.

                      Thanks mate.

I know it suits the mtech 2 kit a lot more, but I bought it like that and honestly doesn't bother me. I like that it makes it look a lot more modern.

Two big boxes just came in.

                        Nothing fun unfortunately.

                        New
                        - Windshield washer pump
                        - Radiator
                        - Heater core
                        - Orings

Still can't find a heater control valve anywhere except the stealership!

Will tackle this job in a couple of weeks, in the mean time I've got some bits to look for.
