I just keep going older - my 2002 build

I started off with my e30 and regrettably sold it and after awhile picked up an e21 which didn't cut it so I decided... Why not go older.

This is my 72 BMW 2002 not a 2002 BMW ???? which my local parts store asks me everytime I go in.. gotta love farm communities in the Midwest. Anywho, originally it is a California car that about 10 yrs ago was brought to Missouri. Before me, there were two owners, and with both the car sat in storage and wasn't driven for some reason. When we originally got it it ran like crap and needed cleaned up which we slowly have done and now I actually daily drive the car for the most part. Now on to the mods.

    1972 BMW 2002
    Exterior:
    All red euro tails
    Shorty rear bumper
    Headlight grills
    Euro Turnsignals

    Interior:
    Recaro Black Cloth Seats
    BMW Woodknob
Momo Futura Wheel w/ Momo BMW horn
    E21 Shiftboot
    E21 Floormats
    "Silver dollar" cluster

    Under the hood:
    E21 Radiator
    Weber 32/36 Carb
    Tailored Suppy Reservoir

What's been replaced since I got it:
    Windshield
    Front and rear window rubber
    Trunk rubber
    Front bumper with nicer one
    Misc relays and covers
    Seat belts
Lots of wet sanding and buffing
    Turn signal switch
    Fuse cover
    Heater core
...can't remember it all... but a lot

Sadly, being the genious I am, I have like no pics of when we got the car. So... I only have a couple older pics but most are current.

This would have been about March, my E21 in the back ground being sad because it just sits now.

But lets jump to know, nothing really major has changed. Sorry for the crappy pics, hopefully better ones coming soon.

Well, finally tackled my cooling problems after a new radiator, thermostat and full flush. Needed to test it so I ran up to Omaha to hang out with a buddy that was having his car shot for a mag and my other buddy who was doing the shoot. Car did great. Crashed a VW car show and took 1st place home in the Other category which I found a bit hilarious. Also got a new OEM fuse cover, all the little things add up lol.

Was looking at suspension from I.E. but after some guys who know their stuff shared some knowledge, I've changed my mind.

    ________

So the Apache's came today, filthy dirty so cleaned them a bit but then put them in storage as we just sold our house so tires and lowering will have to wait sadly while we find our next house. Still pumped with the wheels that still needs a little love.

    ______

Well painted up my Tailored Supply brake reservoir

Then got it installed and also installed my Valve Cover

    Random interior shot

    _______

Well last weekend I undertook a task that my dad and I have been talking about for months.... swapping in a new dash. My dash had multiple cracks and was a dash mat on it plus it was home to a cluster that had 2 of its 3 gauges not work... also to a cracked glove box.

First off... swapping dashes sucks lol, second off a huge thanks to my dad for refurb'ing the heater box, he has way more patience than me... plus who needs heat lol.

I will admit that it didn't look too bad and I noticed most of it just because I've spent hours behind the wheel.

The job was going to involve:
Installed a refurbished heater box, with boiled out core
Install a 3 Piece Euro dash out of an imported 1970 2002
Install a "silver dollar" cluster out of an early 2002
Install a crack free glove box

Also wanted to redo the center console... its not done yet and honestly I'm still thinking on how to do it lol but I do have a major part of it which was hiding the controller for my stereo.

Now on to pretty pretty pics... and no... its still not lowered.. lol

The after pic of the install, I plan on getting more pics soon... I was running out of daylight lol

Also my way of hiding my controller

    ________

So just got this shot of my 2002 from my good buddy Matt Magnino that he shot back when we were working on a S3 Mag feature that will be coming out soon!

    _____________

Nope car isn't lowered yet but these came lol

Also had a shoot come up that will be going on a site soon

Also bought some 8mm plug wires and will be shopping struts soon.

    __________

Well I've been slacking (well actually moving) but the 2002 has a new home and now sits in a garage. Replaced my slave cylinder but it has started leaking again just before the temp dropped. Have some black rear door cards coming to me soon since my are blue and then something will be done about the back seat. Also going to be making some custom oh shit handles to break up all the black that is in the car. The Apache's are still sitting in the garage waiting to get redone, along with steelies to use for "winter wheels" even though really they will be sitting in the garage wheels lol.

Also some cool news is that the 2002 made it on Petrolicious under their reader rides which was a total surprise... now to work on getting some struts to get lower... gotta get dem scene points haha

Owner: Josh Wilson Location: Savannah, Missouri Year, Make, Model: 1972 BMW 2002 When Josh Wilson sent us photos of his beloved ‘72 BMW 2002 we just had to share it. Josh had been hunting for the perfect vintage car that could accommodate to his daily needs. Since most classic car enthusiasts start with one classic and

Decided to take apart the back end of my car, needed to correct my lenses since they were pointed in the wrong direction. Also decided to remove the bumper guards and polish it up some.

Neat looking car! I like the Apaches, did you pick them up from a guy in the northwest?

Care to elaborate on the comment above? I am always intrigued by what passes for "knowledge" sometimes. For the record I work at IE and run all the IE bits on my own car .... 60 miles a day so I'd like to think I've got more "knowledge" then most. Shoot, even ask the guy you bought the brake reservoir from.

Yep the wheels came from Oregon, an e21 guy had em. For the knowledge, the guy previously had a set on his own car, not full bodies just the springs which they appealed to me due to the drop I'd get, he said for a track car they were great but a bit stiff for a daily driver plus Missouri has crap roads. Most guys I know have GC's so he was the only guy I really knew that had ran them. I still keep looking at them though as I'm worried the H&R's won't drop it enough.

Well seems a change might be made then, I've always heard great things about ie but got a bit worried about their ride.

Not a huge update but picked up an old blaupunkt head unit just for looks since I still have my kicker set up, hopefully tackle the console revamp this winter.

Also ordered two new bumper bolts which were special order so it's still in pieces lol, old car struggles

I think that people were concerned you had heard negative things about the quality of the IE parts. If they just don't fit your needs that makes sense, IE has a good rep around here and are generally well liked.

Oh never, I've also heard great things about ie and have my eye on some of their parts still, my 2002 never sees a track so I was just worried about to stuff of a ride.

Personally I found that my E30 with progressive rate H&R race spring rode rougher than it does now with linear, yet higher rate coilover sleeves. Same shocks, same wheels and tires. With the coils it's lower, stiffer, hardly ever rubs and rides much more comfortably.

Fair enough, just keep in mind that the ride quality is obviously dependent on shock/spring rate setup, so the IE and GC setups are put together for your intended use. The GC guys are good, there's been friendly competition between them and IE for a good 20 years.

                    Here's Bruce Carr's 02 on a set of recently shortened IE c/o's.

Decided to build a trunk floor for the 2002, first off was cutting out the back board which was a pain, next up is mocking up the wood flooring and getting that cut.

Since I am still waiting on bolts for my back bumper, I decided to repaint the brackets since I had them off

Also did some trading for a early trunk since mine has the late one with the trunk badge which it shouldn't have plus its straighter than mine.

YES! Another 2002 build! I love these :)

                          Edit:
Hey you can try this fancy carpentry technique for copying complex shapes onto a template. Its called spiling.
Basicaly you take a card stock (or other thick paper, or thin wood like door skin) and cut it out to a ruff shape that fits in the area you are trying to fit a piece into. You want the piece to be about half an inch smaller then the final fit will be.
Then find a piece of hard wood or plastic and cut it into a wedge that is small enough to fit around all the corners you are fitting the piece into. You may need a few sizes width wise, but they all need to be the same length.
You then place the spiling block with the sharp edge of the wedge towards the out side of the piece you are fitting, touching the inside of the trunk walls in your case. Make a pencil mark on your card stock at the back of the block. Then fallow the sides of the trunk all the way around making marks as you go. You will end up with a perfect scaled down copy of the inside of the trunk floor on the card stock.
Take the card stock out of the trunk and place it on the plywood you will use for the final product. Tack it down with some staples so it wont move. Then put your spiling block on the first mark you made with the sharp edge facing in this time lined up with your pencil mark. Make a mark at the back of the block, and continue around the entire shape. This way you will have the perfect trunk floor shape to scale on the plywood, and you can cut it out with a jigsaw.
Its a bit of work, but you will have a perfect fit.

I actually just traced the carpet since I had it and then I'm going to cut it in 3 pieces so its easy to put in and take out if I ever need to get to the spare or gas tank. I took a dremel to all of the edges to take it in a bit plus I wanted to take off the sharp edge from cutting it lol

Hey thats smart as well. If you got this down really clean and and bought a router to get the edges nice and clean, you could sell these for good money.
