    My First E30: '86 325es

Heres a little transfer from my thread on Bimmerforums...

Well, i guess this is where the build officially starts. I picked up my first e30 today: a 1986 Black 325es automatic coupe, on April 12th of 2014, for $400. The car had randomly stopped cranking one day and the previous owners didn't want to/know how to deal with it and threw her on Craigslist a few days after. My dad fronted me the money so i could pick her up the next morning, and we flat towed it the 1/4 mile home.

We got home, hooked up jumper cables, and as my dad cranked it for the first time and nothing happened we saw gas spraying from the hose running to the cold start injector. We immediately replaced it with a bit we had laying around in the garage, and low and behold she fired right up. A complete lack of fuel pressure and the ECU didn't even power the starter motor]. A HORRIDLY blown out water pump was the next thing to address, which left me to deal with the pain in the ass of removing the fan without the special BMW tool... Oil filter wrench, an adjustable crescent wrench, and 20-30 minutes of fiddling with just the damn fan and it was finally off.

I switched to an electric fan about 20 minutes later, NEVER want to do that again.

Skip a bit of waiting for parts, rubbing compound and general pains in the ass and that night the car they assumed dead, drove perfectly.

So here's how this little project sits. At some point whoever owned this car genuinely cared for it as the engine bay has to be the cleanest i have ever seen on any car this year that has been left bone stock and mechanically its in very good condition. The body and interior, from the previous owner... not so lucky. Rear seat seams all blown out, carpet torn all over the place, sunroof motor seems to dangle freely in the headliner with no purpose at all? shifter trim held down with electrical tape, appears the front end below the bumper has been ran into its share of parking blocks and such, rear drivers side appears to have been smacked a little and theres a pretty decent little crease in the body line for the flare on that quarter panel. Paint was 110% trashed when we got it, but a bit of buffing and delicate hammer work tomorrow should hopefully knock a bit of these problems out. Its definitely a project hahah.

But enough blabbering, heres some pictures of my new baby!

The moment i pulled her into the driveway and decided i was going to enjoy this little car.

    After a bit of love.

Will keep this thread updated every time i do something to the car, cant wait to straighten her out and make her proper!

Since then shes recieved a fare share of parts, mainly just fixing issues lol, only "mods" are the addition of 6x9's in the rear deck, alpine head unit and a 12" Basslink in the trunk, keyless entry addition, and a Momo hub/wheel combo. More pictures of the cleaner edition coming soon! haha.

Anyone have any tips on restoring my wing? I know these Sport wings are getting harder to find but mines pretty beat... 2 or 3 of the studs have come loose entirely and the paint is absolutely destroyed, the foam might even be cracked slighly underneath. Even worth a resto?

Probably not. You can find them in decent condition for 40-100 dollars

Just had a friend from up in Sacramento that used to have an e30 tell me he has an early front valance laying around with 1 small crack in it. $40 and its mine, gonna get that in a few weeks when i head back up there and should make my front end look much better. sadly only have 1 of the mounting brackets and with the bumper being tucked hell with putting more on even if i had them, so i'm probably going to have to do it janky hahah.

Anyone local to the Santa Cruz area that might be willing to help with some sunroof shenanigans? I know I've seen a few e30's bouncing around town. It seems that possibly my sunroof cables aren't in evenly or something, as when the tracks aren't connected(no roof panel) they work fine but when the sunroof panel is on not so much. I'm assuming the uneven cables could cause a binding as it won't slide back more than about 1/4-1/2" generally. Or any help at all would be appreciated be it in person or not lol
