    Hephaestus - 325i

    Seemed appropriate for a name
God of blacksmiths and fire (Huh-fess’-tus)
Distinguishing Features: Ugly face, scraggly beard, massive powerful hands. Usually wears a mechanic’s uniform with his name embroidered on the pocket so he doesn’t forget who he is.
Now: The god likes to hang out in his workshop fixing cars and building inventions. He’s not very good with people, but he can do anything with machines. You want a robot to do your homework, or a life-sized metal giant to stomp on your enemies. Hephaestus can have one ready in a matter of hours.
Then: Poor Hephaestus was ugly from birth, but he didn’t get any prettier when his parents chucked him down the side of Mount Olympus, making him a cripple forever after. He’s not much to look at, but he’s clever with his hands. The Olympians made Aphrodite marry him, thinking that it would settle her down, but that didn’t work out too well. Hephaestus is a jealous husband, always on the lookout for that scoundrel Ares and anyone else who might want to flirt with his wife (which is basically every man with a pulse).
    Symbol: The anvil and hammer
So.. I just picked up a 325i a few weeks ago. There is a few things wrong with it, and thought a build log with results may be worth posting.

It's a basic 4 door, M20b25 automatic, nothing special car. It was purchased from an auction, so I know nothing about the previous history.

What I do know, is it's down on power, and the suspension is bad. very bad. So, as things get updated I'll start posting results.

My goal for the car, is just a fun work commuter. It may get a track day at some point, but my end goal has nothing to do with racing, street or track. I may drive this back to Florida and give it to my son, or may just sell it once this contract job is over. So, I'll do the cheap reliable upgrades, not go to far out on a limb, trying to stay price conscious, and upgrade what is necessary with the idea that I need something cross country reliable, but also totally willing to sell.

Since I am in a temporary location, I don't have much for tools. Some jackstands from craigslist, a $60 stanley combo socket kit, a $20 stanley wrench kit, a $20 jack, and a $25 multimeter. I have no garage, no carport, and no concrete, all work will be performed in the dirt drive.

The stock 14" bottle caps are in good shape, but the tires are complete junk. While they do still hold air, they are balding, and have much dry rot leading to major cracking.

For almost the price of new tires, I picked up this set of 15" rims and tires. A little style should go a long ways.

I'm not going to put them on just yet, as I need to pass smog first, then get some suspension pieces in place. I'm not decided on rubber vs poly/powerflex/condorspeedshop for bushings. I don't mind a firm ride, but the next owner just might.

I will be doing the H&R springs, with Billie's. I've got a few weeks before I get to make that purchase, but would like to install the bushings at the same time.

When purchased, it was a little rough running, but reliable. I bought it after a 5 min test drive, and immediately took it on a 3 hour road trip. I would honestly have no problem taking it on a cross country road trip right now - drivetrain wise.

AFM looks brand new, and the resistance strips are perfect.

In the last week, prior to attempting to smog.
-New coolant temp sensor - This single sensor probably has the largest affect on your engine running correctly, and is just to cheap to not replace. $15

-New intake bellows - The old one was showing age, with some cracking, and loose IAC hole. $30

-New walbro 255 fuel pump - I lacked a fuel pressure tester, and errored on the side of caution. There were no signs of replacement previously, so I wen't ahead and put in a new pump. $75

-New 3bar bosch fpr - A bad or weak FPR can leave you chasing problems. Just to important to not do. $80

-New fuel filter - Always do this. $12

17/lb injectors, and chip from mpowerful - Oh yeah. $150

adjusted valve lash - Lots of noise before. Sounds like a sewing machine after. Also affects power. used 1 new valve cover gasket. $20

      20/50w GTX oil change - $50

With each part, everything is becoming more responsive, and more stable. I'm still on my first tank of gas since buying it, as I've been playing mechanic more then driver. I need to put some miles on it, but the high desert heat, mixed with no tint and no AC make for a sweaty ride. AC and tint will be addressed shortly.

Smog was a fail for Hydrocarbons. Test guy said coil wires were erratic while trying to get a signal.

      So, this week
      New bremi wires -$140
      New bosch coil. - $80

Definate improvement here. Stronger pull through the rev range. The occasional misfire is no longer heard (just little pop sounds inside the cat).
New sparkplugs should arrive tomorrow. $15

What I'm trying to address with all of this.
      1. Just updating week / questionable components. The last time this car was smogged, was over 2 years ago. The previous owner did not think it was worth the money to pay the impound fee. So, that tells me I might want to be cautious. However, I am very used to questionable projects, and can trouble shoot most problems pretty easily (specialized BMW knowledge aside).

      2. Pass smog. I'm in Cali, so that is a must.

      3. Road feel.

      4. Resell value

On a good note, when I purchased the car, it had a fresh exhaust system. New cat, new muffler, and it sounds pretty good.

Valve lash was changed from .010" to .008", resulting in a much quieter engine, and more power. I know I had a high mileage engine, so I decided to run some Seafom aerosol through it at the same time. Downside is, I can't tell which made the difference, but there was certainly a decent HP gain made. Running the "aDyno" app on my phone, 0-60 had an almost 1 second difference. While 1 sec is huge, the reality is, now it only takes 10 seconds to hit 60, which is slow by minivan standards. :(
