    Time Attack E30 Build

Hey everyone. I am already a year into my build, but I figured it was about time to share some of what I've been doing in a build thread. I'll start with a little back-story.

I purchased the car in July 2013 with the intention of building a track car. I wasn't sure if I was going to race wheel to wheel or do DE's and TT with it until I realized the potential to wad it up in wheel to wheel was more than I could afford to risk.

I paid $3000 for the car, and it had:
    Brand new Bilsteins
    Brand new H&R Sports
M50 swap done cleanly (but incomplete) with ZF Trans
    New Valves, Springs, Retainers
    New Vanos
    New Control Arms

Here she is when we first got home:

This was a Northeastern car, so the under body rust was BAD. I put a 4x8 sheet of fresh metal into repairs, and every nut/bolt/stud had to be cut and replaced.
Over the next 3 months (in addition to rust repair) I replaced all of the fuel and brake lines, rebuilt the stock calipers, rebuilt the diff, did every bushing in the car, new guibo, new csb, new shifter bushings, finished the wiring for the swap and got her running right. All of this was done in the driveway, since I didn't have my own shop yet. Then the fun stuff started. At the risk of getting too wordy, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

New Bushings, some reinforcement, rebuilt 3.25 LSD, new half-shafts

Weight Reduction. No mas sunroof cartridge.

    Cage Going in:

So, funny story about the cage. I decided I wanted to race the car starting in the spring, which started one week before the cage was done. So, I got my brother to lend a hand (the only other hands to do any work on the car besides myself), and we knocked it out, start to finish, in 4 days....all TIG.

So, I got the car prepped enough to do some testing and pass tech. This year I raced the car in SCCA Southeast Division Time Trials like this:

Which included the Chasing the Dragon Hillclimb:

I want to do time trials with my next car, but I think Ill go e36 because they are cheaper and I feel bad about cutting e30s up these days. Plus they have better suspension tech

So, we are caught up to the present. I managed to win the regional championship for SU (Street Unlimited) for the SeDiv. Now I'm taking the winter to go back and do some of the work I didn't have time to do in the initial build, which includes some upgrades.

This is what is happening this winter (writing this list made me a little nauseous).
                15x10 Jongbloed Wheels
                275/40r15 Hoosiers
                New Wheel bearings all around
                Motorsport Hardware Studs
                Motorsport Hardware Titan Race Nuts
                Motorsport Hardware Spacers
                Vortech V3 Supercharger
Custom Intercooler setup (Mishimoto Race Intercooler)
                42# injectors
                Walbro 255
                3.5 Porsche MAF
                Cometic .080 MLS Head Gasket
                Custom tune from Technica Motorsports
                Gusset Cage
                Tie Diff into Cage
                Fiberglass Roof
                Fiberglass Hood
                DTM Flares
                Tubular Control arms
                Hydraulic Hand Brake
Hopefully BBK, if I can budget for it.

Here is what I've done so far (Since the last event Nov 14)

Test fitting the wheels and flares.

Mocking up the blower, just for kicks.

                Hacked:

                Making Space

I made the rad support removable via 8 bolts, that way if I blow it up I can pull the drive train out more easily.

Here is a little preview minus the extensive fiberglass work that will be happening.

I built the new front clip so that the grills and headlights mount in their stock locations. I love the front of this car, and I'd hate to change it too much. The bumper isn't my favorite, but I can't afford another one, and it's saving me 20lbs.

So, that is how she sits right now. Stay tuned for updates.

Thanks for the comments so far. I felt a little bad cutting it up, but I'm going to have it for the rest of my life, so it's not too bad. I told my wife that if I have to daily it to work and it's the last thing I own, I'll die living in it :)
