Fugl Brenna, Slooooow restoration. 325i vert.

So I've wanted to post my build for ages, and now I am finally doing it. I really didn't get into maintaining my own cars until a friend of mine turned me onto Top Gear, and showed me the E30 episode. after that I was hooked into the whole BMW enthusiast culture. Though I've always loved the 80's Bimmers, probably started with my mother (and I guess the rest of the family too) who has owned an (in order of ownership) E30, E28 (later became my first car), E23, E24, and is recently back to an E28! Anyway, back on track!

    Some back history:
I bought the car back in 2010 and drove it like a lunatic. After about 3 months, the timing belt broke. Taking 3 piston heads and valves with it, mechanics said 2600$ so it sat for about a year while I slaved to raise the money. finally it got fixed all fine and dandy, got to drive it for a year and a half, then the smog came up again. Surprise! It fucking failed, and I'd lost my job! So fuck it, I drove it for a year without tags, and that's where the build comes in.
My goal for the build is to fully restore the car to it's out of the factory greatness, and improve/upgrade some of the features; suspension, stereo, blah blah, blah. Let's get to it!

(picture from the advert on craigslist)

(after a wash three years later, 9/13)

This build starts back in 2013 when I started doing my own maintenance on the car and will continue.... until it's finished?
I will date entries on the days I originally took the pictures and wrote commentary on them.

"Been having a bunch of electrical problems lately, mostly to do with lights. and as it turns out, replacing fuses can sure help alot!"

"Changing fuses fixed my tail light problem..." "And dash light problem. And even my windshield wipers, which have been out for almost a whole year now! ....."

"However. the scourge that is the right low head light problem persists.."

"But not the High head light problem that started a couple days ago! all this fixed just with fuses!"

"A couple months ago before I got the new tags for the car, I was taking it to get smogged one morning, and I pulled into the space too fast and smashed into the curb, busting open my oil pan (they hang quite low in these cars) spilling out 5 band new quarts of oil. well sufficed to say. it did not get smogged that day...."

"BUT! that weekend it did get a new oil pan, it took about 5 hours of grueling bullshit and sheisty tricks to get it out but...."

"it turned out pretty fucking sweet in the end. It still didn't pass smog, that required a new cat and some hoses."

"Finally replacing the Central Support bearing and flex disc, here are the replacements. Day 1. I don't have any gloves and I'm constantly having to get under and out from under the car so I haven't gotten to take as many pictures as I wanted too."

"Here is the new and the old flex disc, the old one isn't as worn as I thought it be but hey since I'm down there right? Day 3"

"Here's the new and the old central support bearings, well part of the old CSB, it was MORE worn than I thought it'd be. the bracket is broken on one side and the rubber that held the bracket to the driveshaft bearing is completely worn away. Day 3"

"here's the removed drive shaft and the replacements and broken parts. The driveshaft is take apart so that I can get the CSB ring off of it, but I don't have the puller tool to do it today gonna have to finish it tomorrow. Day 3"

"Shot of the transmission with the driveshaft removed. the exhaust has also been unbolted from the manifold and moved over. Replaced the transmission mounts too, the right one was fine, but the lefts one was all gooey. Day 3"

"he exhaust has also been taken apart (it's two big pieces). I'm holding the back part of the exhaust up with a tom tom and a piece of wood. Day 2 (picture taken on day 3 though)"

"Just a wider shot of the shit I just explained. Day 3"

"Holding the transmission up with some wonky ass jack and some wood, had to remove the transmission bracket to get to the flex disc. some of the guides said that the transmission will hold itself up with other bolts elsewhere, those guides are fucking liars. day3"

Post note. April, 15, 2014: "jeez didn't even finish this part at all."
*Probably cause I took it out for a drive once I got all the bits put back together and was just so godsdamn ecstatic about not having a fucking thumping noise whenever I accelerated made me forget about it. This job took me 3 days to do, partly cause I didn't know what the fuck I was doing, partly because I didn't have a puller and no one to take me to the auto store til well after 8pm.

For just about the whole year of 2013 I drove with the top down everywhere (including the dead of night in winter). Because MOTHERFUCKER slashed my roof while I was at a hockey game in Stockton.
Some of these dates don't match up with the day the work was done. I used this guide by BadCab for the work

      December,18, 2013

"So today I am finally replacing my roof. here's the fucked up old one. this is the window."

"Back window from the inside, I took the seats out already."

"Here's where some piece of shit Stocktonian slashed my roof open."

"I've always wondered why he didn't just go through the back window, which was already torn open."

"Got the roof mostly off here."

      "from the back"

"Here's a bunch of tools, and all the pieces you have to take off before you can actually remove the top. Took about four hours to get all that shit off."

      "aaaaaaalmost off."

      "Old roof off the frame."

      "The frame with no roof."

      "Frame from the back."

hours and hours with a wire brush and a glue and rust solvent.

        "ready to paint!"

"Painted. I started working today about 1:30 and finished for the day at about 9:30. tomorrow I clean off all the extra bits then put on the new top."

        December, 19, 2013

"just spent the last hour or so cleaning these C pillars, about to paint them. Didn't take a before picture, but about 3/4ths of each was COVERED in adhesive. fuck I should have painted them last night."

        December, 20, 2013

" mostly just let glue set. didn't put the window seals back on yet."

"this is the best stuff to use for convertible tops so of course it's near impossible to get in california."

"upper window seals on, something so simple manages to be a pain in the ass and take hours."

        December, 21, 2013

"Top is about 90% done here tomorrow I dap some stuff on the inside near the back window and the cross bar seams and then I'm fucking done. and I'll never have to drive in shame again."

        "from a front angle."

        December, 22, 2013

"here's the seats after a good cleaning, shampoo'd the carpet and cleaned off the door cards too."

"And here it is in the light of day. stylin and profilin."
