    Project 2j30 (Mine)

I know some people scoff at the thought this. Taking a perfectly working car and tearing it down to swap a Japanese bastard child engine in. These are two things I dreamed of having. One was affordable, the other not so much. So I've amalgamated this creature that I'm sure a thousand people before me have as well.

The e30 and e36 body styles have been my favorite for some time. I do appreciate modern engineering as well. But that brow is unbeatable.

At work I sit in a chair typing commands into terminals. I primarily take care of the implementation side of our sold computer systems. But double as Chief cook and bottle washer. Phones, email, databases, website, engineering, installer and repair tech from time to time.

So this will be how I remove myself from menial tasks performed on the day to day. Shove a 2JZ-GTE into an e30. 318i I might add. I chose a 4 door because I don't want any excuses down the road. I can easily fit a child seat into the rear of this car. ;-)

In the past it's been minimal Volvo and VW. More recently it was Eagle Talons and other Turbo'd 4G63 screamers. Most notably was a 4 year long DD project I helped my friend/neighbor build. A 92 Talon, 600 crank HP, e85 Fuel and a small GT3076R HTA. The process was fun and I learned a lot. Tuning speed density, fuel system management, the importance of system voltage and spark plug blowout.

As I take my journey I will explain what I want to do. I'll update with pictures as I go. In little steps though as I don't have a lot of free time through the week.

I'll probably have some questions for you guys. As I am new to this make and model. Like where the hell I get post 88 plastic bumpers for the cheaps. And Why don't they sell pre-molded carpet for 4-door e30s?

I will post a few replies to this to save some room for pictures. As things are completed in the project, I will post a new reply and update the OP.

For the look of the car, I want to rid the boards and go straight to post 88 plastic OE style bumpers. None of that fiberglass junk. The car is going black. Subaru Java black metallic/pearl actually. 5% tint in the rear windows and 20% in the fronts. The trim will be painted Satin black. Door handles may be engine turned after polishing. The engine bay will be high temp gloss black with gold heat reflective film on the fire wall. Battery will be relocated to the trunk and I will attempt to tuck the harness. Wheels will eventually be BBS RS sporting satin black lips with bronze center and hardware. Lights will be projector lows and regular high beams. Tails will have to be replaced as they have been swiss cheesed by who knows what.

The car will be lowered static. I've seen posts about converting to s13 suspension. But not enough to complete the install in my opinion. So I'll be doing research on that.

I have to figure the rear end upgrade and decide if I'll go 5 lug if it's easy enough.

Engine will be an OE 2JZ-GTE from an Aristo paired with an R154 trans. No wild modifications at this point.

    Stay tuned for pictures.

Warning this thread is image intensive. Not like it really matters anymore.

This thing will not go back in. Can't sell it either. 2 months now, no bites.

The car is starting out in what I thought was really decent shape.

Due to damage on the body lines and someone dropping the hood. I've decided to buy a new hood and fenders. Also the front end is off of another car apparently?..

Rust removal and self etching primer. I removed the fender sealant to the best of my ability as well.

Peeling clear coat before (Driver Side)

Peeling clear coat before (Passenger Side)

Body work started on both sides. Tons of small dents here and there. Slow process but necessary. The trunk section has rot behind the driver tail light section. I will most likely use filler to get it's shape back after ruck removal and conversion.

The trunk didn't fare as well. There are holes on both sides. Driver side will be patched with glass. Thinking I'll have to put new metal on the passenger side.

For reference, this is the color I am using. Saw it, ordered it, no going back.

This is dipped in the can, clear coated with cheap clear so I could visualize in person.

Some more body filling. Small dents I don't really care to pop out.

Cleaning the A/C system out and removing everything from the passenger side of the engine bay.

I've got some rust where the apparent front end swap wasn't sealed properly. I'm going to be flapping that out.

Here I am with most of the front end disassembled. Using a Chase Bays brake system so I can start pulling that stuff out. Most of the wiring is all pulled out and double bagged. None of the connectors were marked. And I'm swapping. So I may just tuck the fuse box in the car and do away with the rest.

Will update when I get time this evening.

Just make sure you grab the non-inhibitor ECU when they deliver the engine. I ended up getting a fucking VVTI instead of the 2jz I'd ordered and I had to change out 1/4 of the part I'd bought already because they wouldn't admit to messing it up.

Still the funnest car I'd owned to date. Try to grab a mk3 turbo with a blown motor to source that r154..dirt cheap and selling the rest for scrap will net you an almost free transmission.

So you got a non VVTI engine?

            Also, pics added.

no, i wanted a non-vvti because i had gotten my hands on parts for it at a great price and they sent me a VVTI and wouldn't exchange it. I already had an EMS, down pipes, and a FMIC setup waiting for the non-vvti motor.

turned out to be a better project anyways; didn't hurt me that bad other than time to sell the parts and have some others modified.

I'd like an M10 to try building a motor.. then find an old BMW to drop it into.

Very excited to see the progress and hope to learn from your build. I'll be building a non-vvti GTE for my e30 aswell.

The M10 I have is fresh 100%. I just cant see myself putting it back in. Thought about doing an ITB setup on it or throwing the CT26 turbo I have on it. But I just can pull myself to do that. I want more power.

I'm also going to be adding a decent sound system. 4 8 inch Crossfire woofers in a 4th order bandpass box on a Crossfire XS 2k amp for lows. 4 MB Quart components for the 4 corners powered by a Butler TDB 475 4 channel 75 watt tube amp. Coupled with who knows what for processing at this point. Maybe a simple head unit with a Rockford 3SIXTY.3 or a Pioneer DEX P99RS head unit. Up in the air at this point.

I was reading more on the VVTi vs non-VVTi engines and I feel as though it's no big deal. I read that the VVTi had drive by wire throttle? But also has a cable hookup. Seems interesting.

The issue now is, I've got a wedding in a year. I don't want to get in trouble dumping everything into this. Maybe just 3/4. Have to go under the radar while driving down wedding costs. Hopefully it works out. Donno.

Will update when I get more done. Thinking a junkyard run on Saturday. Pick up some replacement panels hopefully. Maybe plastic bumpers.

Yes, the Fly-By-Wire was a total pain in the ass to deal with since it has be to retained for VVTI. Basically the cable still pulls the throttle valve open, then the electronics can adjust valve angle based on engine conditions, traction control, etc, etc, etc. Takes a little work, but any good tuner should be able to make it work. I prefer the VVTI, and with the aftermarket support catching up to it; absolutely no reason not to buy one.

Made some progress. Been really busy at work. Trying to finish off projects before the year ends has taken my opportunities to update away.
