Touring LHD / S50 / Turbo build thread

Hello everyone and welcome to my project thread about my 1989 E30 Touring.

This thread will document a mild transformation and restoration of a stock 318i touring, 5 speed, into a daily driver / canyon cruiser car. The car was imported from Germany and arrived at it's new home in Salt Lake City Utah towards the end of 2015.

The BMW crowd in Salt Lake City loves E30s, and we have a LOT of very very nice ones around. Naturally, this encourages us to keep building nicer and better cars. My previous car was a 1989 325i with a full respray, S50 swap, full suspension refresh, euro interior, shaved engine bay and BBS RS wheels. It was a nice car but also was a huge and painful learning experience. I am hoping my next e30 will go smoother and with less headaches.

Back to the touring because that's what we are all here for. The car arrived and was stored for a couple of months due to issues getting it registered in Utah. Turns out the 25 year rule makes it very easy to import cars to the US, but then at the individual state and city level, you may be dealing with a whole new level of pain in the ass, depending on where you live.
This has finally been sorted through, and this E30 is ready for its makeover.

This is how it currently looks in stock form:

I absolutely love the car. It has some flaws, and a lot of rust, but it is a perfect basis for a fun, and less common project. The plan is to build a functional car vs show car (for now), starting with a full suspension refresh and some lightweight wheels, brakes, lines and maybe a couple details here and there to make the car handle well and stop firmly and safely.
The second step would be to clean it up a bit and fix some of the things that are broken or ugly on it. Lastly, the car may get more power with a proper engine...most likely a 6cyl swap. We shall see...

To wrap up this introduction post, i'd like to share a video with you guys....my friend Max and I started a YouTube channel where we will document our builds from hereon-out. You can find the introduction episode of the touring below:

Last but not least, for those of you who have not seen it, this is a video we shot last year, also including the white e30 of my friend Tyson....he runs the hugely successful @thedirtythirty Instagram page.

Will post the first modifications very soon

Alright, time for an update. As previously mentioned, my goal is to make the car functional and fun. So first things first, we got ourselves a small cheap trailer from Harbor freight to test the tow hitch.

It held up surprisingly well...so I plan to make it into a nice trailer that i can strap a set of track tires to, jack, stands etc. Maybe a toolbox?

I had already done some suspension work at this point (obviously), which I do not have pictures of. But if you care, you can see some of the work being done in Episode 2 of our Youtube build Series
Once this was all done, the car clearly handled a lot better. I got some Meyle HD control arms, offset solid CAB, ST Swaybars front & rear.

The wheels and tires are a set of Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 15x7, wrapped in 205/50/15 Dunlop Direzzas. The setup is amazing.
It may not be as fancy and stancy as my previous car, but I can throw this car around turns and not care one bit about the wheels nor tires...i love it!

So, the only logical thing to do at this point was to take the car out to a small track near Salt lake City and test its limits.

We ordered ourselves a mail-order Test driver off the internet to really push the car to its limits and determine what it needs next.

Time to evaluate the setup and figure out the next steps. Ill leave you guys with some more pictures for filler

I got myself a Virtue Australia steering wheel. It is identical to other brands such as Renown in fit and finish. I believe both are a replica of the Momo Prototipo. Both aftermarket wheels feel great in terms an fit and finish and are fine for a daily driver. I would not use these wheels for any type of track/motorsport driving though they don't feel solid enough for that. The steering wheel is mounted to a standard MOMO hub.

Here is a video on how to install an aftermarket steering wheel on an E30.

Another small interior touch is a leather E-Brake handle and E-brake boot.

The car is a basemodel Touring so it only had the projector headlights. Went ahead and swapped in some "Smiley" lights. Tools needed were a BFH and a ratchet...I actually have no idea what else I was doing that i had those "tools" out for.

How she currently sits. I am probably going to pick up some coilovers soon for adjustability and a stiffer ride.

The M40 is a great little engine but it is time for something with a bit more power. The car is very tail heavy, so i figured a little more weight in the front can't be too bad

Nice to see this build on here! I just commented on your most recent video last night and read your response this morning (my name is Mikey Gaumann by the way). Really looking forward to see you document the S50 swap, I'd love to go S50/S52 in my e30 eventually.

You asked me to post a photo of my E30 on your facebook page with the fifteen52's installed, however I'm holding off for now because nothing is dialed in yet. You can check out my build (link in sig, Golden Boy) to see how they look so far, but like I said, I still have final adjustments to make.

Keep up the videos and hope you guys find success with your channel
