    e30Bros: 1987, 325e. S50 swap, facelift, and 5 lug conversion!!

    Hello r3v,
Here is the ongoing story of our beloved car. The username "e30Bros" because we are two brothers that love e30s and are slowly learning how to work on them too

My brother and I bought an e30 last year over copart and did not see the car before buying it since it was 300 miles away. We won it for a bid of $150 (super stoked) but with all the copart fees it came out to around $400 and shipping, 350 more (twice the winning bid ). Now a little more than half a year later, we have begun digging in and having some fun.

Currently, we are removing the engine and tranny and want to clean up the engine bay a little. I am also welding up a rear valance from a 1989 325is that we cut off at pick n pull.

Before putting substantial amount of work and time, we wanted to put in an engine and get it california bar approved, we are leaning toward the s52. I know that a s52 is harder to smog in an e30 than a s50 but reading through the forums of s52s converted to obd1 and smogged in california, I am very much convinced of putting in a s52 (but who knows).

The purpose of this thread is to have an album of work that we can both look back at and be proud of many years later, and if by some chance we can give back to the community - from which we have learned so much - we would be very glad.

*We also have a 1991 325ic that we bought a little earlier, will post photos of that soon:)

**Updates will not be very frequent just as a fyi, since we only have time to work on weekends

Here is the first day I saw it.

    Rear bumper and valance progress.

The valance was cut off a 1989 325is from pick n pull. A good blade made the job so much easier.

I then cut it into three parts to make it easier to test fit it onto the car.

after rewelding the three pieces together and trying to test fit, I found that it was impossible to just weld on the the valance without getting a huge gap on both sides. So more cutting was needed.

        S50 it is!

I was looking for s52's and was about to go get one until I came across a s50 being sold for relatively the same price. Since it was from a dismantler, we were able to also get brakes, the whole front suspension, tranny, and exhaust with two cats off a 1995 m3.
I plan on removing the head and taking it to a machine shop and changing all the gaskets and seals that I come across. Hopefully it wont look too bad down there.
