New to BMW

Hi,

I am very new to bmw and mechanics. I just bought a 1988 BMW e30 325i that has a m20b27 engine.

I was not expecting spark at all when I went to do spark test last night, because owner that sold it to me said it doesn’t run.

When I did the spark test the car did start up.

Spark plugs were full of oil, lower oil pan leaks, lots of oil when degreasing engine bay, interior has cables not plugged under steering wheel, driver side rear axel is off, exhaust is off and has no muffler, transmission seems to work well.

Where would I go from here?

Write it all down and start where your budget allows.

I would clean the engine to eventually see where it leaks. Then a compression test, if all the cylinders are reasonable and even, that would be a good start. Timing belt, tensioner and water pump, check all the hoses. Plugs, wires cap and rotor. How does it run? Maybe add a exhaust system while your at it so you don't piss off the neighbors while you work on this beast.

Once it runs and your comfortable, then that axle needs to be replaced. Then I would move to the brakes. Has to run, then stop. All the rest are extras.
