iX - Project "Diamant in the Rough"

    Hey all,

This thread is where I'll hopefully post my progress on my Diamond in the Rough, the 1991 325iX sedan. Name TBD.

    Car Details:

    Production Date 1990-12-18
    Paint is DiamantSchwarz Metallic (181)
    4 Door Sedan
    M20 Engine
    Automatic Transmission
    Natur 0295wafflesUpholstery

    Options:

S401A Lift up and slide back Sunroof Electric
S411A Window Lifts electric front rear
    S464A Ski Bag
    S494A Seat Heating Driver/Passenger
    S675A Rear Audio System
    S530A Air Conditioning
    S540A Cruise Control
    S556A Outdoor Temperature Indicator
    S240A Leather Steering Wheel
    S925A Transportation Protection Package

Was keeping an eye out for an e30 in good condition when the midwest was hit with a nice snow storm. That triggered me to think about getting an AWD e30. A couple weeks later, I found this iX in the Chicago area. I quickly drove down from the Madison WI area and picked her up.

There's a strong emphasis on "the Rough" the day I brought her home. Originally, I had wanted to purchase an e30 in better than good condition but knew that I also wanted a project car.

On the exterior, we had a busted front wheel bearing, dented hood, and some rust, paired with a smoke-residue filled interior, botched front seats and some check lights covered with black tape(assume this touch was added in preparation for an auction).

As usual, the back seats were in near perfect condition

The front seats, however were covered in tape to cover the degraded leather(yes that's candy corn tape you are seeing).

Check panel, tape included. (Fortunate that the coolant light was just a bad sensor, still haven't troubleshot the SRS light)

To remove the smoke residue smell, I pulled out the seats and vacuumed/steam cleaned and eventually used an Ozone Generator. Vacuuming and steam cleaning the carpets brought the carpet back to great condition, but the smell was still present in the car. I can't recommend an Ozonator enough for removing odd smells from your car.

    Stay tuned!

I like how the solution to the light is simply, "cover it up!" lol. people are humans.

I never got that, I've removed a cluster and pulled bulbs, but not covering it up with tape.
        I do things.

Yeah, I've definitely seen pulled bulbs before. Covering it with tape was a new one for me.

Here's another one, even has a nice shot of the dented hood that I need to replace.

Recently bought an iX manual swap and with it came a full 91 iX auto parts car. I will be spending this weekend tearing it down. I'll only be keeping a few things for myself, so if you need anything, holler!

Been busy pulling apart the crashed auto 325iX that came with my manual swap purchase. The cold isn't helping me get through it as quickly as I want though..

This parts car had 130k miles on it and was maintained meticulously, I have hundreds of service records back to 157 miles. If the frame wasn't in such bad shape, I would have seriously considered adding a second project, but I guess you can't save all iX's.

I will be cutting panels from this car to put on mine since this chassis has virtually no rust and well, I can't say the same for mine. Have most of the interior out and ready to be given away. Soon, I will be pulling the drivetrain.

Pulled apart the 3.91 front diff from the manual swap I bought. Internals look pretty good to me, although I'm not 100% positive what I should be looking out for.

Hopefully this means I can just replace a few O-rings and gaskets, clean up the exterior and move on to pulling apart and inspecting the transfer case.

Radiator has a pretty bad leak so the car is on hiatus while I wait for a new radiator. Refurbished the throttle body from the parts car a couple months ago, took this opportunity to throw that on the car. HereÂ’s a quick before and after. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
