I made this for my (ex)girlfriend for this past valentines day:

All soldered by hand with an iron. The switch and battery are on the back.

Stuff is looking great. My question is, what are you using to take the pictures? Those are some amazingly detailed shots.

Macro Lens FTW. You can pretty much touch the lens and still be in focus.

That is so awesome, you have probably been asked this a million times but, What did you major in? Electric engineering?

^That's cool NitroRustlerDriver. And yes, you can even solder them by hand in a pinch! A quality iron will help with that. But it's tedious, and leads to problems. You actually have more of a chance of overheating parts by hand soldering them where the temperature can't be controlled as carefully as an oven can be. When soldering by hand your iron needs to be much hotter than the melting point of the solder, and how hot the part gets is determined by how long you touch the iron to the part. (there will even be a spec in the data sheet telling you how much heat it can withstand for how long) If you have to work the part for too long (human error) - it will lead to over-heated parts(it turns out that even large parts are so small that they basically get just about as hots as the iron does) - ...Anyways, I'm rambling...I'm really tired...

Speaking of rambling......People keep asking me about making an Alpina style vent gauge - and here is the reason why I'm not a fan of them - I ran into this today - this is a vent gauge set up from a e9x 335i that someone created using generic gauges. You'll see all the problems with them, mainly the reflections. That and the LEDs that look *really*peaty in pictures, but are washed away during the day. You'll see that even though the sun in coming in from the front of the car, the gauge is hard to read. In direct sunlight it would be even worse. (Some of the glare is because of the sun light hitting the camera - but it's clear when the camera moves around that there are issues with such a set up.) Even if the glare wasn't an issue, you'll see that the generic gauges LED's are no match for daylight brightness.. I'll let the video (not mine) speak for itself.

This is an example of what you don't want me to build.

I just think there is a better way to do it.

            New city. New start.

So most of you know what a ruff go I've had while back. Things are finally back on track and....I'm moving!

I'm moving to Seattle (to an undisclosed location ;) ) Yep - I've joined the PNW conspiracy - so I'll be seeing many of you at the e30 picnic! Woot! I should have some surprises by then. Off to finish packing....grrrr. I need more boxes....

              Hi Georges,

good luck on your move !

Regarding the Alpina Gauges, did you see some in real life ? I have them in my B3 and I can tell you that even in bright sunlight they are visible.

They are bright, recessed a little and I can not fault them. Also they can be angled up and down.

Now on the one you show here, it looks like the LEDs are behind some kind of flat clear plastic, which give a lot of glare. As well it is angled up which will add some more sunlight to it. definitely can not compare with the Alpina vent.

Now if you come up with some nice gauge design, I will be very interested to see what you come with.

Keep up the good work !

              Cheers Pierre

Even though any price drop compared to the stupid-inflated alpina is appreciated, I still hope it's not super over-priced ($200+)

                          also, this:
