    m42 in a 2002

I like to build them more than anything. I sold my full turbo setup to a member of the board which will for the most part fund building a garage and also fund my new project for my 2002.

Over the past two weeks I have been installing a m42 in my 2002.

I am using a e30 m42 with the e30 trans. I will run a electric speedo. But this trans can run a mechanical speedo if you swap the back section with a 240 from a e21.

I am waiting on a few things so I will be at a stand still for a couple weeks I think. But it should be running and driving by the end/middle of January. And then it will sit in storage until it gets warm out and I will finish some things.

    Here are a few pictures...

Awesome. The M42 is a great motor, I love to see them put to good use.

Looks much easier then putting in a m20 I'll tell you that.

I though the big trouble was that the m42 is too tall for the 2002 engine bay, thus making it much more difficult than an m20 swap.

Didn't know about that - but I do know that the number one tool for a m20 swap is a sawsall.

Awesome project I really miss my 2002. How quick is a 2002 with an m42? Can it outrun a 325i?

not sure how fast it will be...

2002 is just over 200lbs. Stock m42 is right around 140 right... Then I am not running AC or power steering, no cat as well....

I will probably chip it over the summer

Did you have to modify the oil pan? Is the e30 transmission the one for the m42? I'm interested in doing the same to my '02.

no I did not have to modify the oil pan. Yes I am running a 5 speed trans for the m42 from an e30.

I bought the entire engine, trans, ecu, etc etc from a guy doing a swap to a s52.

                          Cool man.

Jake - are you still running 6v on that car? I forgot to ask you the other night.

If not, have any 6v stuff left?

                          I'll ship your brakes soon.

Does anyone sell motor mounts for this swap or are they all made by the installer?

                              It was never a 6V car...it is a 1970.

I made the motor mounts myself. I have thought about making some off my design in the future. Maybe next fall/winter.
