    91 318is

Here are some pics of the the car I got last Sunday. We drove to New Orleans to pic up. Bought it from cnardinola318is. The car only has 121k miles on it and a really clean interior. The paint is a little faded but the car is pretty straight. The lower valance is a little bent and the lip spoiler is missing. The story is that his girl friend stalled it deep water and tried to start it and it hydro locked. The result was a broken rod. It not only broke the rod, the spinning rod broke the block and the oil pan. It left 2 windows in it, one on each side. You can see trough the block.

The morning after the 800 mile round trip.

    In the garage.

    In position for surgery.

I pulled the engine out yesterday, Hope to get it apart soon and see what else I need to put it back together. I have a block that only has 100k on it. If the head is good I will be back in business soon.

Thanks, I got the engine out new years day and man, is the block messed up. I hope to take the engine apart this weekend to see the extent of the damage. Its a shame because the car only has 121k on it. I have he original window sticker, and all maint. records. It even has new tires on it. Maybe it will be running next week, we will see.

            More Udates

The head appears to have 2 bent intake valves, other than that is looks good. I have 3 other heads for parts so the valves wont be a problem. Here are some pics of the removal and the damage. I don't get a lot in processes pics since I am a one man show.

            Engine out.

            Damage to the block:

You can see through the block:

For now I just plan on putting it back together. I have an m42 100k block that is perfect left from a previous project. The head is straight but has 2 bent valves which I have plenty of. I hope to start putting it back together this week. Maybe be back on the road soon.

Thanks for the offer but I have plenty of parts to put this back together. The only thing I needed was an oil pan but I have one on the way now.

Well I found out that the '94 m42 and the '91 m42 have different size valve stems on them. So I had to order 2 intake valves. They were cheap enough through pelican parts. All parts should be in this week, I hope. Maybe I can start the reassembly this weekend. Fingers crossed.

                            Making Progress

Started putting things back together and thought I would post some updated pics.

More carnage behind the alternator bracket.

Couple shots of the donor block.

                            Getting close.

Well I finally got the thing back together and cranked. It runs like shit. I think it may be electrical. I haven't had time this week to track it down, maybe I will have time to look at it this weekend. I did drive it down the street and it seems really tight. I hope to make this my DD. My truck just uses too much gas to drive it every day.
