    New project Daily.

    Howdy,
So this morning I picked up a new project, it is a 1986 325e with close to 200K. It was headed to the junkyard if no one bought it so I offered the guy $400.

According to the previous owner he drove it for a year and they it started overheating just before he moved to AZ. There is no coolant in the oil or vice versa, so I don't think the head it warped. It fired right up and sounds fine. No clunking or overly loud valve noise. It wont hold a steady idle, but it was sitting for ~1 year, so I am not surprised. I also noticed that two of the valve cover nuts are missing, so I am sure there is a pretty bad vacuum leak.

There is some rust on the rockers, but the only non surface rust is on the front fenders. The front seats are torn and crummy, so they will need to be replaced. The rear is in great shape and has headrests :). The dash is cracky and the steering wheel is torn. The rest of the interior seems pretty good though. All the windows and sunroof work as well as all the instruments.

The headlights are some kind of hack job. The high beams are sealed and not connected, but the lows are a hella ellipsoid I think. I will have to run the part number as they have bulbs separate from the housing, but don't look quite right.

I have a spare radiator and will be ordering a new valve cover gasket, waterpump, tensioner, timing belt, and thermostat on Monday. All the hoses appear to be fine, but I will find out tomorrow when I start tearing it apart.

oh shit that's going to be nice. Got a spare waterpump if you need one. We still need to get together to get me some skirts for the 323i.

The color is what convinced me to make a project out of it as opposed to parting it. :)
Today I removed the air box, radiator, and coolant hoses. Still no milkshake and the radiator looks to be in good condition. The one of the coolant hoses had some ware from the alternator and a pin hole leak, so that may be the culprit in the overheating.

I pulled the valve cover to take a look. The OP clearly did not change the oil regularly. :( Looks like a job for seafoam. At lease there are no broken rockers or missing springs ;).

Yeah but still no new pics. When doing the timing I found one visibly bad motor mount and one that looked fine, but was split at the top. I replaced both of those. I mounted hacked e34 high beams into the sealed beam buckets along with regular sealed beam lows. Now I found a fuel leak by the pump, so I have to check that out next.

              UPDATE 2008-11-15

I have not had much time to work on the car due to all my time being spent building a garage. I did finish the timing belt/water pump and drove the car around a bit. The overheating is gone and it seems to be running pretty well.

I found two fuel leaks. The first was coming from the filler hose which had rotted out at the tank. The second was coming from the fuel absorber down by the fuel pump on the driver side.

After doing some research, I decided to just bypass it with straight new fuel line.

The rust is pretty bad. All four doors and both front fenders are rusted through, so I have written them off. The rockers had some pretty minor surface rust, which I ground down to bare metal. I then coated the rockers marine rust inhibitor. I then taped off the door trim and sprayed the whole side down in underbody coating. As the doors and fenders will be replaced eventually, this seemed like it will make it through the winter no problems. It doesn't look great, but it sure beats spreading rust.

With winter on the way, I ordered a set of snow tires. I was planning on getting a set of Nokian hakkapeliittas, but at just $60 each + rebate, I decided on trying out some Goodyear Snow and Ice.

I am going to throw them on in a few mins, and take it for a spin. The suspension is all rusty, but is still pretty firm. It should be fine until next spring when I'll give it a full refresh.

Court, we missed you yesterday at Turk's.

I took the car two days in a row now. It drives pretty well. Had it up to freeway speeds today. Smooth as butter. I am liking this b27.

I'm so jealous, Will. I'm looking for a similar winter car. I may have found one, though a little out of my price range. (but it's an '87 325e + it's bronzit!)
