    MY 1 yr old $800 90 is revamp...finally! (PICS)

    PICS on Pages 1,2,3,4

Hey everyone, thought I would stop lurking so much and actually post some pictures up and contribute in my own little way.

    Background:

A year ago, this past July I decided to go back to school and get my MBA (graduate degree) So, I sold all my toys, cars, boats etc... and house to become a full time student. However I needed a form of transportation, a car. Anyway I was dating the love of my life who is unfortunately gone now :(, this build is kinda for her too... and her friend had this BMW she kept telling me about. I said ok ok I will go look at it, and I did. It had been sitting for three years...they started it every now and then and drove it around the drive way (literally) it was clean, no accidents, 2 owners, and it had some flaws here and there but overall it was a sound car...I asked how much they wanted, and the wife said how does $800 bucks sound? It has a leaky head gasket....I said sure why not...long story short year later, not a problem with the car, I have two weeks off before my last semester starts and then Law school, so I figured to rebuild the engine and fix a couple fo things.

    Interesting Side note

The guy I bought it from is a famous musician, who you hear almost everday on the radio at some point. I can't say who, as part of my purchase agreement...sorry but I thought it was cool side note

    Stats:

    1990 is
    Bronzit
    195,000 miles
All orginial, I mean everything except belts, brakes etc...
    2 Owners
    A/C still Blows ICE COLD
    All records

    Current:

This is what I have done so far.

    1. IE race springs, stage 3
    2. Complete front end overhaul for the supension, new tie rods, control arms, bushings, steering rack...all done out of maintence, replaced the rear control arms, etc..radio and fixed the gas gauge

    What is Planned:

    1. New head gasket
    2. Water pump
    3. Timing Chain
    4. Gaskets all around
    5. Starter/Coil
    6. plugs/wires
    7. Distributor
    8. Short throw shifter
    9. Clutch
    10. New Driver seat, sparco
    11. Tires Wheels
    12. Fix the bumper(s)
    etc...

    Time frame 2 weeks

    On to the pictures

Doing a little reading...after undoing most of the accesories

Pulling everything off in preperation for the pull

    Exhaust out

    Drive shaft..look how clean/condition

Just took the driveshaft off the Tranny, now where else

    Engine out

What came out of the Coolant overflow/fill tank

What 4 years of a leaky headgasket does to the underside of the car..even after I replaced the steering rack...ugh

Oh and my partner in crime for this...Austin, just got back from IRAQ and wanted to learn how to wrench, he has been a big help and a quick learn

Ok thats it for now I will update as I go, ask as many questions as you would like I will answer as I go along, any tips or tricks. I had the engine out in less than 2 hours...

    Thanks for looking

    Burn

not a good spot for the jack stands. You should put them some where on the subframe to avoid and damage. All the best and Good luck.

I have jack stand there, there is no weight on those, they are there for safety :) I could let them down and take them away and the car would still be in the air...thanks though for pointing that out, so others know. :)

here is a link for good spots for jack stands although it does say you can use the jackstands where you have them. I have used them there as well but there is a lip there and when i used the jackstand I bent the lip and was unhappy about it. car looks like its in great shape.

Tell Austin thanks for his service and also a big thank you for using those shorts for working on cars... wearing those things in public would be criminal. :D

Oh, and I think the jackstands are in a fine place. I put mine there all the time. They just should not be the type that have a tight radius in them that creat a sharp U (yours look fine).

Cool project. BTW: probably a typo, but the car doesn't have a timing chain but a belt. Also, bronzits look tits with nice black interiors:
                Converted mine from tan:

Really fell in love with bronzit after the interior change.

I have urethane pads on my jackstands and installing pads or a few layers of cardboard can prevent the lip from getting bent.

If you are dropping the rear subframe, you really don't have a choice. You have to put the jackstands where Burn put them.

                  Good progress, Burn!

                      good start!

you can't go on saying you bought the car from some famous musician and NOT say who it is...

$800 E30? did you buy it off K-Fed?

LOL, nope ummm let me think how I can give a hint without giving it away?!?! I will try to find an obscure song or something...I can say he is in a metal band that does have one or two songs that are "mainstream", I should amend my original statement to say that if you are really into music you would know who they are...
