hey guys,
Recently was looking through the net looking at kit cars and the like and then i whent screw it. I did engineering at school for 5 years. I'm currently a associate diesel engineer. I'm pretty handy on cad and with my hands. I'll stop modifiying my e30 and take another look at the idea. We modify it to be individual and how much more individual can you get then completly designed and built by me and a few mates. Currently designing chassis structure, already have shell's general shape designed. Once i shade it etc etc. I'll post it up on here for your discussion all comments are welcome good and bad.

Current engine idea is a horizontally opposed 6 from a porsche boxster with a bit of work. Cams, porting etc etc not really looking to go turbo maybe supercharged. The plan is for it to be a purely track car with street ability. I.e. You can drive it to the track. Any helpful ideas on the engine/transmission will be welcomed. Its going to be mid engine whichever engine i end up using.

Planned total weight is 600kg. Large amounts of carbonfibre and carbonalloy plus your standard fibreglass will be used for the outer shell. Inner shell undecided what steel will be used any opinions will be welcomed as before. Will be updating continously

honestly i would ditch the porsche flat six and go with a Subaru STi motor, i know its probably a suggestion that will find much criticism on a German Car forum. However I have been a subaru fan for a while and have owned 3 Sti's and these motors are unbelievable. Plus you can find them for next to nothing, where you are located bec Japan is so close! Its already turbo charged and with some modifications it can easily hold 500 whp so you can drive it to and from the track! and it is easily converted into RWD, you could even do an LS2 out of a Vauxhaul (the four door version of the GTO that is for sale in Australia)

STi's really arent that cool. Your better off with a bimmer motor. For my untuned 7psi car to keep up with a decently modded STi, i am really really unimpressed with their performance. The STi deal is a whole lot of hype.

The boxer sounds cool, im not very familiar with the performance of these motors but if you like em, go for it and make it work.

thanks for the help the problem with the sti motor is i will need to run intercoolers which means more ducting. or i could run water cooled which means more weight. i am already running twin radiators at the front for a better weight distrubution. The idea of the porsche is that the gearbox is already designed for a mid-engine frame were as the sti motor is designed as an awd. Therfore to go rwd i need to purchase a new g/box and i believe subaru made very limited rwd only cars plus the extra length required due to the fact that the output is at the rear of the g/box not in the adds more length required and therefore more weight. So live yeah i was thinking about that but with an i6 or v6,8 etc there is only so low you can place the motor with a h6 i can place it on the same level as the axle line therefore eliminating a large amount of height to the centre of gravity

Care to elaborate? I doubt this is something that would be done cleanly/safely. But I will wait for an explanation before I make my decision.

It can and has been done. Drifters do it, for example. Not sure about the $100 though. If you leave everything else the same, you'll break alot of things.

Need stronger axles, diff, subframe, even tranny, etc, etc.

Cleanly+safely? Yes
Cheap+reliable? No

I totally see your point with the H vs inline or V. Either way its very cool and i hope to see something come of this eventually.

So what kinda HP are you looking at with a good, affordable, reliable porsche motor?

thanks. Hopefully want around 400-500hp. The perfect balance between weight and power is 500hp to around 600kg. Was looking at a gt3 H-6 around 40-50k here in aus.
