    s50 build

*finally a small update* post 11
Picked up an s50 from an automatic m3 with just under 100k miles. Was powerwashed with no plugs in it and got some water down the bores. Owner realized a few days later and pulled out what he could and filled the bores with oil. I thought it might still be okay and it was a good price so I picked it up. Pulled the pan off to check the bottom end and get it ready for an e34 pan. Thats when I decided it best to pull the head off.

this is after cleaning the goo out of the cylinders and spraying with some MPL

number 1 seems to be the worst.

The motor spins freely, but it will clearly need work.

My plans are now to do a full bottom end rebuild with new bearings, gaskets, seals, and a set of +.020" 11.0:1 pistons and rings from wesico. To me the rust on 1 seems too bad to just hone out otherwise I would go with standard bore.

This build will probably get drawn out over the new few months, but my biggest problem will be figuring out which car will get the engine. A brand new 3.0 would be nice in the e36, since the e30 has 3 times the mileage. The e30 could get the m52 from the 328 though. Comments, input, opinions from anyone are always welcome.

ouch, i bet yer happy you pulled the head on that one. i DO still see the cross-hatching marks on the cylinder walls though...maybe you could get away with just a hone.

I might try once I get the pistons out, I can get rings from work just over cost for around 420 bucks all 6, but the pistons I was looking at are 750 for the set with rings.. We'll see how it goes.

+1 for the e30 drop. its alot of fun to have that much power in an e30.

I think you can still get S50US rings directly from Deves. Rev Engineer got his from Deves around two years ago for $260.

Haven't updated this yet, but I just ordered pistons for this build. Dropped the block off at the machine shop to get some opinions/prices. They said they wouldnt be able to get everything out with just a hone and a bore was only $15/hole so it will go 0.5mm over when the pistons get here.

No pictures as of yet, just cleaned some of the parts up getting ready for some paint. When pistons get here and the block is done I will be getting bearings and gaskets to finish the bottom end and I will have plenty of pictures then.

I am wanting to paint the block lime green to really bounce off the black engine bay and all the aluminum will be painted dull silver/grey. I know the lime green has been done a few times but its a cool crazy color. Should be in the car before the end of the year....

damn those cyl walls look f$%ked up, for the price of most basic machine work like a bore and a hone i would bore 'em all out, it's cheap enough.

i say drop it in the E30

Okay, proof that this engine will actually be done:

Just arrived, dropping them and the crank off at the machine shop so they can finish the block, then I'll assemble it. Maxsil .040 over replacements, my original plans didnt work out, got screwed on my first piston order. So this will be 87mm bore 3.1litre.
