looks like this could be very interesting. I am also planning an S50 swap into my 318is in the future, so you have my attention. (subscribed)

Note: more pics is always good! break up the giant paragraphs with some pictures, even crappy ones.

How come you're replacing the timing chains on the S50? High mileage?

I can't say I'd advise opening up the motor like that for "maintenance". The timing chains aren't a problem on these motors unless they've got tons of miles on them (200k+ miles), and at that point it's probably due for a full rebuild anyways.

Do the basic maintenance stuff- plugs, valve cover gasket, hoses, belts and put it in the car to see where you stand.

Good luck, these cars are fun with some power!

Yeah I will try. Most times I just get too involved and forgot to shoot pics. Most of what is going on right now is just fixing BS previous owner ignorance.

Hmmm ... Tempting but I am going to go ahead and swap the chains. Motor has 140k. My philosophy is the swapping the chains will be much easy out of the car. I will also be pulling the head off to inspect the cylinder walls if when I pull the pan I find anything that I don't like.
To be perfectly honest I am a little OCD about my motors.

After a long break from my own cars (working on other projects), I have gotten back on the E30. Started last week with dis assembly and a quick 80 grit scuff over the entire car. Then blocked entire car finding each imperfection, marking it, massaging it out, and applying first skim coat of filler. Found a rather nasty area of rust in the rear valence at the battery box and passenger side seam below the door. Seam below door is from crappy body job thanks to PO. Rear is the typical rust spot which I have cut out and am redesigning how it all comes together so that it will not hold water.
I am not putting the S50 in until the winter.

                More as progress continues ...

So the rear fenders have a small issue. They were not wide enough to fit the BBS's with out it lookin like Irish poke. So we worked the rears last night. First 2 pics are before and the last 3 are afters. I cannot believe how BAD my arms and back hurt this morning ... that was a real work out!
