funny how you found me
okay to measure a rack...
a metric tape measure should be enough of a tool. if you have a protractor, it can help count partial turns. start by counting how many turns lock to lock. now, pick a side, and expose the inner tie-rod by removing the boot at least partially. you should be able to see the toothed rack. crank all the way to one side, measure from a reference on the rack body to another reference on the inner tie-rod (say from a mounting bolt to the lock plate). now, crank the rack all the way to the other side, and measure again.
(first measurement - second measurement)/rotations = mm/rev
however, this type of measurement is prone to error because of partial turns. so i recommend you repeat but doing only two complete turns, and repeat again doing 1 complete turn. if you are accurate with your measurements, you should get the same mm/rev each time. if you are getting close results (within a few mm), you have succeeded.
however, and this is important, you may have a variable rate rack. therefore, depending where you start turning from, you can get different results. so i recommend you measure say:
- half turn left starting from center to halft turn right from center (one complete turn)
- one complete turn starting from either left or right lock
both measurements above are for 1 complete rotation and should give the same result for a linear rack. if the two above measurements are very different, you have a variable rack. the first measurement will be the imporant one.
let us know the results!
added test: since you have both rack in your hands, another simple test is to line them up side by side. center all the racks and align the two inner tie-rod lock plates and crank both racks the same amount, say 1/4 turn at a time. this will visually instantly show you how different/similar the racks are. the tie rod that moves the most will be the best. you can even line up your stock e30 rack for a complete showdown. would make for a great video or sequence of pictures. that would really lay down the proof!90 E30 325i

$5.00 ? Why not pay pay $5.00 as a good will gesture, and not necessarely in a mandatory way?
Bandwidth costs money. Maintening a forum costs money. Members who have pledged $5.00 have an extra signature mentionning they are supporters of the forum. I don't see anything uncool. Members being free to pay or not.
Just my 2% of a $.Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

i dont mind paying for added value. i do this on my local subaru forum. but paying just to post is lame. most forums get by just fine with only advertising, premium memberships and sponsors. that's how it should be.90 E30 325i

Some one just offered to unban me if my ban was deemed unjust but I tell you i just have no interest in belonging to a forum that bans whole IP address ranges for things like asking the wrong question about the wrong thing at the wrong time.
So if you are banned for no aparent reason and you happen to use ATT Go to connect to the net thats why.
