Internet connection issues while uploading YouTube videos

I keep having an issue with this and it is increasingly frustrating. Hopefully there is someone here who might have some insight as to what is going on.

I am uploading five, 5 minute long 720p .mov videos, one at a time. Within a few seconds of starting the upload, my internet connection dies, and I have to repair the connection or whatever to make it work again. Not only does the upload fail, the whole connection to the internet just stops. I remain connected to the router, but can't go online. It's as if when the connection is under heavy load, the connection dies. My ISP is comcast, and i get 12Mb down/5Mb up. What else is weird is that the first video uploaded just fine (on the fourth try) when i set it to upload after i turned off my monitor for the night. And the other thing that is weird, is that I have had no problems uploading HD videos in the past.

sooo, what the hell is going on? Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

ok, so i just got the second of five videos to upload, and it again was set to start as i was going to bed, so maybe it also has to do with inactivity on the computer? only music was playing while the video was uploading.

buttttt, i also queued videos 3 to 5, so they would upload sequentially, but after the first successful upload the connection died again.

It's the modem, sometimes you can overload it depending on the connection and it just shuts off. It usually happens when it gets too overloaded with a p2p service but uploading does a great job of killing them too. There's not really anything you can do about it if youtube doesn't have any way to change your upload settings.

My router is kind of old and works great most of the time, but when I'm doing a lot of torrenting and multiple computers connected to the router are using a lot of bandwidth it will cut out and need to be reset. So...I would also say you're overloading your router (could be modem too).

Though, it doesn't seem like you would be doing quite enough to overload it...

            thanks for the input everyone.

i set another video to upload while i was gone during the day, and it worked. the internet connection died immediately after.

i am not sure whether it is the modem or the router, because when my internet connection goes out, it does not actually stop the connection for any other devices connected to the network. it seems like the router or modem is singling me out as someone hogging bandwidth, or something to that effect, and then requires me to reset my connection.

the router is a fairly new gaming router, and we have not had any problems with dropped connections until this particular youtube uploading thing. i have had no problems in the past uploading youtube videos of the same format, from the same computer, over wifi, etc.

I'll tell you again. It's not your router. It's your modem.

Alright, I believe you. so is there anything i can change in the modem settings that would make this not happen? is there something comcast can do? would having a different modem solve these issues?

A different modem might help, or keeping it very cool.

ok, that makes sense. it is currently next to the router and an xbox 360, along with all kinds of wires and outlets. if it was dropping the connection for my computer, though, wouldn't it drop all the connections? or does it really "single me out"?

Well the router physically controls all the connections, so if anything is hooked up it will still say it's connected but it won't be able to access the internet.

small update. i switched over to leopard, and am currently uploading a video. so far the connection has not died. the upload isn't blazing fast or anything, but maybe leopard is managing the network activity better than windows 7 was. that's the only thing i can think of.

Vista has ALL kinds of network connection problems, so if Windows 7 is anything like it, then that's probably the problem.

well, the 5th video uploaded just fine, in WINDOWS. what the hell. this is after it failed, in windows, after being about 90% done.

there was a power outage today, resetting the modem obviously, and i am guessing that may have something to do with the success i have had today.
