all thought the though of a country like north korea having nuclear weapons is a frightening, many people such as U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates think that these actions by nk are just the death throws a dieing dictatorship and that Kim Jong-il is just trying to make the country look strong to the world and his people before he passes the torch to one of his sons.
of cores this is just speculation at this point, but so is everything ells because no one but Kim Jong-il really knows what he is planning.
nk is not the only country that worries me. when it comes to nukes iran and pakistan worry me just as much. pakistan more so then iran because they have a huge problem with the taliban taking over parts of the country right now.

Yes N K is posturing but that is not the point, when you have this going on there needs penalties, so far all they have gotten is a multi billion dollar care packages to get them to stop. We have tried the carrot its now time for the stick approach.

But if we to ground with N K there is still a good chance we will get our asses handed to us because the Chinese will be involved, and we have taught them how too and sent them all the tech to manufacture on the same or greater level then we can.

Current Iraq Debockel 2005 170,000 is US troops "peek deployment there"

afghanistan IIRC is about 34,000

thats over 100,000 fighting men short of the just what was in Korea the 1st time and it was a fairly small scale war the 1st time! Hell in Vietnam in 68 we had 550,000 in theater then. All branches of the military are short on bodies right now with our current obligations. How do we know this, because we have reserve units that have been called up and had their active missions in theater extended to some time double the initial marching orders, also because the DOD has said "we dont have all the man power we would like to have"

We dont have the capacity to fight a huge conventional style war on that scale with the current all volunteer forces we have. Plus look at much of our equipment thats sitting back here in the states in a depot waiting on refit because of their tours in the sand box and the sand eating the equipment.

yeah i think that nk needs to suffer some harsh consequences for their actions. they need to know that their actions will not be tolerated. the thing is that all these un sections and stuff do not work. they have already be sectioned to hell and back and it is not like the un can deprive them of much more.
as far as their military power. they have the 4th largest military in the world. the thing is that they are very very short on fuel, and they have been so short on money that they have spent almost no money on updating their military. they may have troops, but they are stuck in the stone age.
i do not think that china or russia would back them if it came to a military conflict. nk is not worth enough to russia and china. the west and russia and china do billions of $ in trade every year. that fact + the fact that it would spark possible military action against their countries will stop russia and china from doing anything.
if nk does start a military conflict i have no doubt that there will be a draft. if there is, i am volunteering. no one drafts me ;)

The fact that we did not have enough troops to go to war in Iraq in the first place. If we were going to go into Iraq whether you think the decision to do it was right or wrong we should have taken at least 500,000 troops so we could have locked the country down and put the fear of god into anyone wanting to start an insurgency. If a woodbee insurgent knew he was going to get a bullet between his eyes the second he stepped out of line then maybe a lot of them would have thought twice before doing it. The first thing you have to have to even start to form a democracy is peace and stability. The fact that the Pentagon has for years been phasing out boots on the ground to pay for technology. Stop loss, the fact that the Pentagon is taking personnel from the Air Force, sending them to infantry school and deploying them, extended deployments, multiple deployments, The fact that we don't have any troops to supplement the thirty or so thousand that we already have permenantly staioned in South Korea should the North ever decide to cross the thirty-eighth. If we get into another major war whether it is by choice or not there is going to be a draft unless a lot my mother and fathers are willing to volunteer their sons to go fight. To top all of this off there are some in the Neo-con community that would like to take on Iran. The number of troops required to take on Iran would probably quadruple the number that should be in Iraq. This would be if you wanted to do it right. I am sure there are neo-con idiots who thing we could just throw a few thousand more troops than we have in Iraq and march right in but Iran is much bigger, more radical, and has three times the population of Iraq.

the army has around 400,000 active, that includes grunts, support personnel and every thing. thats less than peek deployment of army and Marines durring Vietnam buy 150k.


And mad: you remember how the Iranians beat Saddam in the early 80's dont you. Millions and millions of Muslims armed only with a cotton towel on the head and copy of the Koran, over ran and routed the 4th largest and one of the best equipped armies in the world at the time. Is say we let the jews off their chain and let them handle the crazy Muslims in Iran.
