During Vietnam my father only spent one tour there. Too bad many of our soldiers can't say that today. It will be an interesting fact to find out in the next few years how the rate of PTSD in Iraq and Afghanistan compares to Vietnam.

My uncle spent 3 tours over there, Special Forces, (Rangers IIRC, I dont know any more than that he never has and will never speak of it) one of my dads buddies was a seal and was there 67-71 I think, he still has to sleep in a separate room from his wife and she has to wake him up with a really long stick, been that way since he got home nearly 40 years ago he has nearly killed her in his sleep due to night mares he still has to this day.Last edited by mrsleeve; 05-30-2009, 05:46 PM.The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. -Alexis de TocquevilleOriginally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

Yeah hes one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, to look at him you would never think he would have been a seal, kinda tall and skinny (still really frickin strong though) He will talk about some of the stuff he did, nothing to detailed, but I guess much of it is still classified or was 10 years ago the last time I saw him.
He will kick your ass though, my dad always told me the story about how Dan Cleared a bar by himself, because some dude was messing with him and tried to fight him and eveyone wanted a try after he kicked the shit outta the 1st guy.The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. -Alexis de TocquevilleOriginally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

The difference between your uncle and your dads friend and my dad is that they were in the special forces and my father was not. When it comes to deployments the special forces are a different ball of wax. My father was just in the regular Air Force. I am not saying that he had it easy over there but he wasn't in the special forces. This year will mark the the forty-second year since he returned from Vietnam and he still will not talk about what happened over there. The only way I will ever find out is to send off for his service records after he dies. The father I grew up with was a different man than he would have been had he never been sent to Vietnam. I have heard stories about the man he was before he left but the same man did not come back because these stories are vastly different and he was almost 30 when he got back. He had been in the military for eleven years when he was deployed. He wasn't some eighteen year old kid. I can only imagine the damage it did to those guys because they were still kids and at least my father was a full grown man. The difference then and now is these kids are having to go back three, four, and five times and we still have another two years before we are supposed to get out of Iraq and God only knows how long it will be before we can leave Afghanistan. During Vietnam soldiers had eighteen months between twelve month deployments. I think we should stay in both countries as long as we are wanted and needed but its going to take more troops in Afghanistan then we currently have to do it right and not continue fuckups of the President Bush, Vice President Channey and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. If we keep sending the same troops back over and over again especially with only twelve months between eighteen month deployments something is going to break. With the structure of deployment and rest back in Vietnam, three tours would have been the most my father would have been sent on. I used to work with a couple of guys who spent three tours in Vietnam. One was a Marine who volunteered for his and the other was a crew chief on a Huey and people who flew helocopters or on them were in high demand. One time the Air Force tried to get my father to take a Warrant Officer's commision to fly Hueys and he told them, "Hell No!"

I completely agree. The question is how would we take him and his ruling party out without starting another war with Russia and China too?

So are you saying they have been exceeding their recruitment quotas all for the last six years since we invade Iraq? How many of the people that you do security clearences for have to have morals wavers? I know the Army has had a lot of them. I also know 911 we had a big surge in enlistees.

My father has talked in little bits and pieces too but only if I ask questions. I don't remember what I asked him but one time he told me that he ran into Special Forces guys over there and he basically said they were a bunch of crazy fuckers that would've killed their own mothers.
Talking about your dads friend clearing a bar reminded me of something about the guy that I worked with who was a crew chief. He was a heavy drinker. I could just tell when he came to work that he had spent a lot of his off time drinking. He functioned but I have enough alcoholics in my family to know one when I see one. Fortunately my father never took that route to deal with the problems that war caused for him.

With the Ruskies it would just be like it was the 1st time around and Vietnam. just a proxy war, the Chinese, are a whole nother ball game who knows with them. Oh I prolly will not volunteer but if the number comes up I will go, might get to put some of my rusty long range marksmen shit to use
Oh my uncle, I always called him that, but hes really my moms cousin, and he has estranged him self from our side of the family, so I have not seen nor heard from him in 15 years or better. The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. -Alexis de TocquevilleOriginally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.
