what to do with insurance check?

    Hey guys,
    Quick question regarding insurance check.

back story: My girlfriend was in her honda accord and guy driving a company vehicle reversed into the front of her car. There was not to much damage. Only a little bit on the hood. The insurance company came out to look at her car and assess the damage and concluded that there was 1700.00 dollars worth of damage.

I was astonished that they gave her that much. The headlamps still work along with everything else. The only damage it a dent in the hood.

My question to you guys is, since the check was made out to her, is she obligated to get the car fixed or can she keep the money. (She could really use the money for tuition fees)

what do you guys recommend? should she just get it fixed now that she has the money or use the money for school?

What year accord? She could get three if it's an old one.

If not just get a hood from the junkyard and keep the money.

Cash it and use it how she sees fit to. If she wants to drive around a shity beat up POS then thats her business. I would just get a new hood, form a yard and thats that. There may be more damage behind the bumper cover and thats why she got so much

I had an incident play out like this to me before. Lifted truck backed into one of my jeep cherokees. Guy claimed he didn't even realize he had hit me after I followed him for roughly 15 miles. Luckily part of my grille was laying in the gap between his tailgate and his bumper. Took out my grill, head panel, headlights, bumper mounted off road lights........got check for roughly 1500 bucks. Spent about 100 on jeep parts at a yard, replaced them all myself in an afternoon. Then went and bought steel at a surplus store and hardware and new off road lights.....made super kick ass bumper so next douche that backed into me would know they hit sumthin. Also bought a case of beer with said check and a carton of smokes and took the Mrs. out on a date...this was pre-marriage of course.

The ethical thing to do is to fix the car; that's what the check is for and why most places require drivers and cars be insured. Legally, the check is hers and she can do what she wants.

The day is coming when a claim that is paid will have to be shown to have been used to have repaired the covered vehicle. Insurance companies are always looking for ways to limit payments and not fixing what was covered is bound to become one of them.

i disagree. if someone does cosmetic damage to your car, they technically "owe you" the amount required to return it to original form if a body shop does it. it has nothing to do with ethics.

The ethical thing would be wasting it on blow and hookers.

The word is ethics. Looks it up.
