LUKE: Can you get some of these?

I was reading the latest edition of the Mechanical Engineering journal and I happened upon this little article:

This is extremely interesting. If they can get good quality sound out of these they will have completely changed the speaker industry.

So, how long do you think until they are available to buy?

So basically, instead of linear excursion you get sort of a drum face effect? Cool, but I wonder a few things

      1) frequency response (hard to imagine a "conveniently placed" one moving too much air so I'd guess the bass extension is lacking)
      2) cost

105dB is pretty impressive though--wonder how efficient it is power-wise.

For the record, "flat" speakers are nothing new (electrostatics) but they're definitely not this versatile nor are they cheap.

Kinda like ribon speakers? Check out http://www.magnepan.com/ they make ribons that are awesome sounding, a bit lacking in bass, although the mids and highs are superb. One of their biggest sets is still only H 14.5 x W 48 x D 1.25. Pretty well priced also.

                Just another audiophile gimmick.

We had customers all the time that wanted the flat in-wall speakers that you can hide behind drywall mud, or cover with a canvas to make it look like a picture, they always sounded like shit.
