“I don’t know anything about cars,” Whitacre, 67

For once, Holmes is right. Unfortunately, he still has the completely wrong reason. It isn't that the car guys have gotten it wrong and therefore you need a non-car guy.Well lets see, "car guys" have been running GM for how long? I find that funny considering 9 out of every 10 GM cars is a rolling piece of shit. Obviously the "car guys" couldn't get it right these last 40 years or so. Maybe it is about time someone different was in charge.
Good leaders are good leaders. A CEO is so far removed from the actual making of cars that it really doesn't matter that the CEO knows little to nothing about making cars. As long as the CEO has some experience with the making of products and is a good leader with a solid foundation in good business practices, knows how to delegate and holds people accountable, then things will be fine.
There is a point that if you are just a car guy that you probably won't make a good CEO for a car company. A CEO has a different skill set than a good car guy. A good CEO will listen to his car guys and let them make decisions about what to make and how to make it. I suspect that the "car guy" CEO's that they have had were too involved in the car making process and did not let their people do their jobs.
New blood at GM is probably good. It's time to break all the molds and get the company innovating again. However, I seriously doubt that will happen for as long as the government is involved. Obama will take the place of the "bad" car guy CEO's and dictate things based off of agendas that have nothing to do with building a successful car company.1987 E30 325is
