I think the main upgrades from the 3g to the 3gs is the longer battery life and the video recording capabilities along with a faster processor. How fast I am not sure but the 3gs has 256mb of memory compared to the 128mb the 3g has. Only way to see how much faster it is is to mess around with both.

If you are eligible for upgrade in my opinion I think it's worth it to get the latest one for 199. However for people like me who signed a 2 year contract for the 3g this past year, the 3.0 software update is good enough for me b/c of the key features added such as the copy and paste, mms messaging (near future) and the landscape text.

Also, your cell phone is only going to be as fast as your network. I have the original Iphone. A few months ago I got my wife the 3G. There is no difference in internet speed or phone function at all. It was essentially the same hone with a few minor updates and a slimmer case. It depends on the network... I cannot speak to the 3gs though. Sorry.

Having played with the 3gs the entire day it came out, and the 3g... as rneedham stated there isn't much difference unless you have 3g everywhere you go. and even then, where are you going that you need web pages loaded a couple seconds faster. Both phones were played with at the apple store

Yeah, it is. The 3G seems slimmer because it is tapered, but it is thicker in the middle.

I have the 8gig first gen iphone and I love it. I wouldn't spend the money to upgrade to the 3gs, but I am seriously considering the 3g phone. The only thing that my phone doesn't have that I would want is the gps. Other than that I could care less about tethering and a 3mp camera. If I want to take good pictures I'll use my camera.
