I've done MMA for three years now, and am a blue belt in BJJ, and I think that's the most fun of it all. Are you planning on doing something with your girlfriend? I often see couples come into the BJJ gym I go to and I think that that would be ideal. BJJ isn't really a weight losing activity though, but boxing sure is. Maybe check out a straight up boxing gym near you? They usually let you do a trial period and are pretty cheap for what they are.

I've been doing martial arts my whole life. 17 years and counting. Lets just say I've come and seen all the fads come and go.

the current state of what MMA is the trend of what people want. Though I am open minded and learned many MMA stuff I frown on people who starts with MMA. I will say this, the current MMA is not martial arts, its "how to fight like a cage monkey".

You want good basics? do you have patience? go with kung fu, tkd, or karate. The biggest problem with tkd and karate and slowly with kung fu is that its so washed out here in the USA by just bs blackbelts and stupid litigation that leaves many studio to teach litte to "no contact" martial arts... what a joke. Find a tradition school and you will be fine.

MMA has tons of varieties, all standard cage monkey stuff, like the new stuff kfm feature on batman. Martial arts is a life style, street fighting is for guys with napolean complex that needs to swing thier dicks around.

1.) tkd --> great on flexbility basics and good on foot work. Its a really good foundation for many higher difficulty moves. Great thing about tkd is that its is a sport and therefore there is certain tournaments and systems you can follow. Its easy for those new to martial arts. But you will lack serious close counter techniques. You learn distancing very well in tkd. I did this for 8 years myself.

2.) kung fu --> probably the best basics you will ever learn. Get a good school, and you will learn what training is really about. However, kung fu require patience and long term training, and its not for everyone. i've done this about 6 years, 2 overlapping tkd.

3.) karate --> I respect karate and all, but I would avoid karate as a first decipline. Its very rigid if you go tradition, and if you are starting late in the game its not good to be not developing extensively on flexiblity. The movement are rigid as well, and you will find that higher difficulty moves give you alot of trouble down the line. I did this about 3 years.

Later years I learn kickboxing, american boxing, thai boxing, bjj, capoeira etc. all intermitently and not as extensive. Although I totally fell in love with american boxing and capoeira.

on Battleground Ave, in Big Lots and ABC shopping lot, there's MMA store. Stop by there and find out where local gyms are. Since MMA is a little bit of everything, and work outs are very demanding. OR, let's go running every morning or evening, there's an amazing loop around the lake we could use, and we know we'll be safe, since we won't be driving.
