    Video Card Recommendation

I want to upgrade for video card for my desktop. My current set-up is:

    CPU: AMD 2700+
    Memory: (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

I need a AGP card that can support some graphic intensive games. My ATI Radeon 9700 pro isn't cutting it anymore.

Any recommendations? I'd like to keep the cost around 100 bux.

    Thanks,

Eh at this point in the game, although costly, an AGP card won't get you the same bang for your buck as a PCI-e card will. Yes, it is unfortunate that you don't have a motherboard with a PCI-e slot, because I am suffering the same problem. I am just getting a new i7 build with a GTX295 for it...I should be set for a good 3 years or more.

But yeah, I know the position you're in...AGP just isn't a highly supported bus type and it sucks!

7600GS is probably your best bet. It's one of the last high end AGP cards out. I think there are a few ATI based cards out too, but go search around newegg.com and see what you can find to fit your needs/budget.

So lets see...new processor, new RAM, new board, old power supply likely won't cut it either, gotta swap to SATA from IDE more than likely, too.

I suppose the good news is that the new setup will likely have adequate onboard graphics, 100X the bandwidth on RAM (nothing under 4GB, ya hear?) and throughput on SATA kicks old SCSIs ass.

        Time for a new box.

acutally, you can get a pretty good deal on AGP cards now. If your mobo supports 8x, there is a last revision of AGP card thats only $80 or less that performs better than the slot will support and if youre not looking to go upgrading the entire rig, this is the way to go. Not to mention there are silent versions of this card too... i'd tell you what it is but not at home and cant remember. its not hard to find it on Toms or such.

Dude, 2x1GB Ram?? AMD 2700+?? You're telling me you want better graphics - which generally means it's for gaming - when you're running a 2.1GHz SINGLE CORE?????

You need to save up some money and just buy a new computer all together, you're computer is so out dated my linux box is better than that. AGP is a dead technology nobody builds new equipment for it. It's time to join the rest of the world and step up to PCIe. Hell you can go to costco and buy a cheap ass HP for twice the cost of that card you're looking at and it'll still be better than your system.

I built my computer from scratch for under $800:

              AMD 3.2Ghz Tri-core
              8GB DDR2 PC6700
              2TB SATA 3.0Gbs HDD (1TB, 500Gb, 500GB)
Asus AMD motherboard (2 PCIe, 2 HDMI, 7.1 HD Audio, 4 PCI, etc)
              EVGA GTX260 Graphics Card
              DVD-RW Drives (2)

If I can do that for that cheap, you can get a decent system for half that price. Hell I'll build you a system, just give me your budget.

:giggle: Someone else with a video card as old as mine...I'm still on a Radeon 9800 Pro. Oh well, it was the blisteringly fast top of the line card at the time!

I think you'd be far more satisfied with saving up to build a whole new PC though. Honestly, putting the best video card that you could in your PC would probably leave you unsatisfied with the performance gains.

                  thanks for all the replies

looks like I will scraping some change together for a new rig

                      64 bit works great.

Yes, it has some special "features", welcome to windoze.

What´s the difference between 32bit Vista, and 64bit?

Made the jump from XP a few days ago(Or rather, the motherboard died on me and I had to buy a new computer), and I don´t have a lot of experience with Vista yet.

Basically, 64 bit "processes" a larger chunk of info with each "process", thus should work more efficiently.

It is WAY harder to do so, of course, but stuff designed for it works great.

                          Generally.

That makes me glad that I didn´t skimp out when I upgraded.

But they are virtually the same? No difference except the performance?

64-bit = more than 3.7 GB of ram

                              (8GB FTW)
