Sacrelidge to e30 Touring in winter?

So I need to buy a daily. I like my 97 328i sedan, but it's not enough. I've been pretty set that I'm going to look for an e36 m3 sedan in 5 sp.

However, I also really don't want to give up the whole touring thing. I fucking love those cars, they are so hot. But I really don't have the money right now to have a touring and a beater.

Winter is pretty harsh here, and I hate having 2 cars sucking up my money. Plus a beater means shit always breaks which means money and downtime, and there's nothing worse than downtime when it's 10 degrees and snowing.

Should I buy an e36 m3, winter it (I'm much less apprehensive about wintering an e36m3, they are a lot more "disposable" than an e30 touring) and just look for another touring in a couple years when money is better (or an e30m3, that would satisfy my e30 craving).

or is there any way I could live with myself wintering an e30 touring? I mean, I could get some undercoating. And take it through the automatic car wash a couple times a week. and just get it repainted in a couple years when money is right.

I don't know what to do.

DO IT. It's your car. Just wash it.

BTW, my eta+LSD in the snow = HOLY SHIT TAIL HAPPY.
Not kidding, if I even looked at the accelerator, I was sideways. Lotsa fun if you're by yourself. Not so much in traffic.

my eta plus a 2.93 in the snow, with propeer tires was a dream, tail happy when iwanted it to be and passing trucks when iwanted it to.

eta plus lsd equals awesome winter beater status with very little breakage

I'm DDing mine. I used to hate people who DD sweet cars through the winter, but I've done the two summer car and one winter beater thing, and it sucks. Too much hassle, too much money in maint, insurance, registration, etc, and spend half the year driving either a car I hate or one that I want to modify.
My s/c'd miata is my real summer car, but year round I need something I can throw some bikes in, cart the dog around etc... I wanted one car to do it all, and this fits the bill, and is friggin' cool to boot.
I agree E36M is more disposable, but the touring has got, well, utility.

Such is life, and he actually has these cars. tourings have space, it's a valid arguement.

i had an 85 325e with a 2.93, it was at 130hp at the wheels. thing was a blast, but not very stable. even cruising on the highway I was scared as hell.

I guess I could look for an e28 or 325e sedan for winter, and just bite the bullet and accept there will be downtime

I'm just sick of winter beaters. my 328 was great this year, it was nice having something comfortable in the winter for a change. such is life.

I've got different cars, but definitely feel your pain.

i was in the same boat you were about a month or two ago

i was seriously debating selling my beloved mark 3, which ive had since i was 16 (21 now) and built it all with my own two hands, for an e36 M3. i would take out a small loan to compensate the difference for an M, and also get rid of my e30 (winter ride), which i also have a heavy passion for, so i wouldnt have to worry about working on two cars all the time and switching back and forth every few months

BUT, i couldnt get enough interest in my mark 3, and i changed my mind. although, im starting to feel those feelings again, seeing as my mark 3 now has a shot turbo, and theres something wrong with my e30

daN owned the car before me, it was his doing. Shaved head, 2.5tb, modified 2.5 airbox, chip, exhaust, and a bunch of stuff I'm likely forgetting

                            bavauto springs that suuuuucked.

if I could find a reliable 4 door 325e, 318i or e28 in 5 speed for under 2k I would totally do that, but it seems they are all pos in that range. Where are the cars that have rough bodies so they sell cheap, but are mechanically sound? that was the case with my eta. thing ran like a champ and only cost me $600.
