I have a Porsche. It's got a lot of work to go and is serious project, just like a kit car. Why not have the real thing. If you wanna put work in and drive something meaningful to you cuz you tightened every screw and handled every piece then just buy somebody elses project car and assemble it, if it works out you have a legit car for cheap. If not, sell it and break even. Niether of those seem to ever come from kit cars. It's not the real thing so something will always be missing soul wise to the car. And you can't sell kit cars, project or completed. It's the sad truth.

Project cars can be clean though.

The only good reasons I see for building a kit car is if the owner doesn't care at all about authenticity (fiero-lambos), the original is really really expensive (think lambo kit cars again), or if modifying an original to something crazy is unthinkable (superwidebody AC Cobra kit car with a v12, as cool as it sounds I'd never chop an original up to do it).

It's a kit car, shows pride in building it at home. Most can do this vs restore a rusty hulk of a car. As long as your not saying it's a real 356B or what ever. I could careless, I like em the have a place for everyone.

There have been some neat ones over the years like last years Lambo in the basement it was a kit car.

What's with all the alpina trim in your sig & avatar?

I have Alpina interior on the way for my E30. I like it and I like Alpina. I can't, nor will I probably ever, afford a real B6 or anything close. So, when I decided to re-upholster my car I decided to go with Alpina upholstery. No where on the car is there an Alpina sticker, badge, emblem or anything. I'm not trying to turn my eta into an Alpina, or other wize try to represent my car as what it is not. I merely decided to make a subtle illusion to a car that I have always coveted without what I thought was going over the top. I didn't think a green and blue stripe would be too blatant. Besides, Alpina, Hartge, Zender, ACS and others have offered 'upgraded' components for the E30 since the get-go as well as complete cars.

This thread came about because I responded to a thread requesting information on Porche 356 kits. I mentioned that I did not personally like kit cars after giving a link to a Kit-Car website, and then went on to offer the option of buying a real 356 coupe or project car which would probably be the same in cost when all was said and done. That was my opinion, that is what I would do if I wanted a 356. If someone wants to build a kit-car that is great, go for it, but don't expect me to fawn over it at a car show as much as I would a real example.

As far as my sig and avatar are concerned, some may have noticed that I have changed it probably a dozen times up to this point. I am coming to this forum on a borrowed computer because I am in the middle of a 2000 mile move. My laptop died, and my desktop with Photoshop and other programs is still with my wife halfway across the country. I did all of my images on this site with MS Paint and there is only so much subtlety allowed by that ancient program. I agree the images at this point are over the top and look like ass. They will probably change, again, and again before they are something I like. And that will probably be when I get back on my own computer at a time yet to be determined.

Rainier Hooker, I love your sig.... I got to watch Mickey Rooney make some of the beer comercials when I was a kid... Cried when the took the R off the brewery... As for Kit cars, there are two ways to look at them, one, they will never be the original, and two, who cares, they are fun and sometimes better... One, if you have ever driven a classic, even an e30 M3, you know what it is like to go to lunch somewhere and make sure you get a window seat so you can make sure nobody mess's with your car. One of the VP's at work has a kit car 356 porsche, he paid over 20 grand for the thing. But he doesn't worry about it.. he parks it wherever he feels like it, and if someone scratchs it he doesn't care, after all it is a reproduction. Now if it was a real 356, he would have paid over 50 grand and the repairs would be astronomical, as it is, he gets the oil changed and the valves adjusted and has fun... Trust me, the smile on his face when he leaves the city and heads for the lake is just as big, if not bigger than the guy who is taking the cover off his original 356 and warming it up to go to a concours and then keep a watchfull eye on everybody who is within 20 feet of the thing. As much as I like to fire up our 88 m3, I drive an 84e to work and the store and for parts, cause the older you get, the less you want the hassles.. just my 2 cents worth..

To each his own, there are plenty of Kit cars I can't stand! Nothing worse than a Testerossa on a Fiero Chasis YUCK!

I suppose you need to define kit car fully as well, I've seen some amazing Shelby Cobra Kits. Also, some great original mini's that were kit cars. Who say's a kit car can't contain OEM parts as well? That 356 Kit was hot.
