I used to do some sea kayaking back in high school. A handful of single night trips, some 3 day trips and a couple 5 day adventures. It's awesome going out to an island setting up camp and relaxing in the quiet. Have the whole island to yourself.

I hope to do that next season, put in around Gulfport, MS and paddle out to the barrier islands and do some camping. I've no idea how difficult it would be to make it out there, but it's quite a distance so I've gotta do a bit more research before trying that one.

Im thinking of building a kayak from a kit.

World class boat kits, boat plans, and boatbuilding materials. More than 20,000 CLC boats are on the water: Kayaks, Canoes, Sailboats, and more.

I frequently travel to the gulf coast and spend a few days to a few weeks camping and kayak fishing. I splurged on a Hobie Mirage drive yak, Was expensive but totally worth it when you are working with the kind of currents you encounter in coastal waterways.

I don't really take pics when I am out but this is the kind of yak I have...

Perfect for me and my dog(Border Collie) And all my gear(Tent, Camping/Fishing stuff, My .22 and a bit of ammo, Food) Or me and another person and a smaller amount of gear.

Just noticed this thread. Got back from a week-long trip about a month ago. We hit Algonquin Provincial Park above Toronto. Put-in a week at a time, canoeing and portaging from lake to lake. This year I built myself a Fram 176 Greenland replica & used that instead of a canoe. We did about 25 miles in a week, plus many miles of hiking on our "off" days. Good times & I highly recommend it!

I went on a kayak trip through the pine barrens in jersey a while back. It's like hiking on your ass, and was a lot of fun. I would highly recommend a river trip to anyone who like the outdoors, but doesn't like to stand up for more than 20 minutes at a time.

Sometimes, we'll put in, paddle upstream til we don't want to anymore and do a 180. We have had someone drop us off, put in and go down til we hit the next bridge crossings which is what I'm doing on Saturday. Occasionally, we go to a rental place and pay them a fee for transport upstream and get off river back at rental place (my least fave as it involves the fees).

So what's the idea here - you park a car at both ends of the river and paddle on down?

i hate canoes, they feel so unstable and shitty. my family has a two-person old town kayak that is the shit. every summer we go upstate ny to the adirondacks and you can kayak miles on the huge lake we stay on. or put it on the car and drop it in a pond some place.

they're really fun and worth the investment, plus the two man can get crankin too! its fun to kayak to a hiking trail, hike up hike down and kayak back. lots of fun work

I wanna learn to kayak. Pops has one up in the garage that I can't touch. I don't know the first thing about kayaking but it's a kevlar Necky Arluk 3, blue and white. Full tour. 18ft Onno paddle, 17 1/8th oz. I'm slowly gonna earn these, I think if I kayak enough I might get these as a gift since his back is messed up now.

You could probably rent a kayak for a weekend. There are places all over that do it (at least here in WA). Then if you like it, get your own.
BTW, I love kayaking, oddly enough I have only done it in salt water. Kayaking in the San Juans kicks ass. I also did a Kayaking trip in Catalina when I was a kid, that was the poop.

I've been looking to get into it myself too, but it is a little cost prohibitive. However, my friend has one that he lets me borrow from time to time.

A kayak trip would be amazing, considering I am heavily invested in backpacking gear and go as often as I can.
