If you can score them, stock JK shocks will swap to the XJ with 2" lift. Getting me some Rubicon's Monday on a lift I'm doing.
There are alot of low buck tricks you can do.
Here's my build, a bit different. Small block swap.

Its nice to see other XJ owners here. I have done and will add to my leaf pack in the rear with donor XJ leaves I picked up from the salvage yard. Search "Bastard Pack" on the two forums Collin listed above and you will find lots of info. www.jeepforum.com is also a great forum. Also search the for sale forums there too and you may find some used bumpers/racks for sale. Do you know if there is a local/regional jeep club in your area? There is always someone wanting to upgrade or parting out their jeep.
I second the Jeep Forum site....wealth of info on there plus the posters are very nice.Leave a comment:

If you wanted a regular lift (front springs, rear springs or add-a-leaf) I'm partial to BDS. My shop is also one of their dealers. Good stuff and nice ride, won't beat you up.
You can get a 4 1/2" kit from Zone off Road, a side company of BDS for about $499.
Check out the NAXJA forum link above, alot of good info there.Leave a comment:

I'm currently building a 86 XJ. Lo-buck all the way. I also work at a off road shop and lift these all the time. If you wanted cheap and easy, spring spacers in front and shackles in the rear will gain approx 2". Room for 30's with ease. Any questions, just ask.
Here's a good place for bumpers and such, quality stuff. JCR Offroad
BTW counter guys will look at you funny asking for a body lift as they don't exist. Their unibody.Leave a comment:

That's fine I don't want anything that big, this is going to be my dd. I want to keep it pleasant to drive unlike my gutted e30
what is the like-ness of a scrap yard having sweet bumpers? I see jeeps with them all the time, I figured they would be way cheaperLeave a comment:

some good forums:
Early cherokees (ie not grand) have smaller arches and require trimming to fit anything above 32" tires, on stock ride height. There some good add-a-leaf/shock packages for the rear and I hear the wrangler rubicon suspension fits right into the front for about a 2.5 lift.
When I started shopping for my xj I couldn't believe the prices compared with the e30. Except for bumpers and roof racks, $600 is cheaper than anything I've found. Just throw a packing palette on top and call it a day.Last edited by Collin; 08-04-2009, 07:43 PM.Leave a comment:

thanks, id rather not cut the flairs to fit bigger tires, maybe a body lift? suspension lifts are still pretty cheap for that mild of a liftLeave a comment:

build your own bumpers and roof rack.
trim instead of lifting to fit 31s.

Jeep guys
Today I acquired an 88 jeep cherokee limited that is bone stock from the original owner
Any jeep guys on here know where to get cheap bumpers and roof racks?
So far all I can find are like $600 and up. and i would rather spend that kind of money on my now non daily e30 than my dd jeep xj
any tips or info on these heeps would be greatly appreciated.
My plans for this thing are:
3.5" lift
31" tires
front bumper/brush gaurd/off road lamps
rear bumper
roof rackTags: None
