Guns have never been illegal in Australia?

Assault weapon-type stuff is illegal, but you can still own a bunch of other firearms legally. Our cops carry shooters, too (Victorian Police prefer to use their pistols to their handcuffs - always have)

Such a good set up... why would the crash into a cab with the bimmer, fire a shot a couple blocks away, and alert everyone that they are switching to a silver mercedes???
Could have been planned even better.
