4x4/winter beater advice from r3v

I reallly need to get another car to DD in the snow and salt this winter but don't want to spend much (under $2000).

Would like 4wd and drive about 5 miles round trip for work.

I'm thinking pre-95 F150, any other ideas?

Over 120,000 it has had a new tranny.

I wanna get a mid 90's 4.0 powered Cherokee for the wifey.

Old cherokee (XJ) they're a dime a dozen and you can beat the piss out of them, I had one I just couldn't kill. Plenty under $2K and super easy to work on if you need to.

true, but far too nice to let salt and snow eat away. plus i forgot to mention that i want to use it on the beach in the summer.

What kind of gas mileage do those Cherokees get? I've heard it's pretty poor.

I would def go with the XJ. Cheap and easy to work on...plus you can beat the shit out of them in ways that my 4runner wont handle.
