Degrees aren't worth the paper they're written on if you don't do anything with them.

Look at hilljack z31maniac... he has a BA in Public Relations (Journalism) and he's a hairstylist.

I grew up in the same kind of BS. So much of that crap they stuff down your throat in HS makes you bitter. All I ever gave a shit about at that age was having a garage space with a space heater to make my car go fast.

It was funny how it all went down. They were all like "we want a rich guy" after HS, then 10 years down the road I find them falling over on the bar begging for any cock they can get their hands on.

How much German did you know when you applied?
English is my second language, and I think I'm pretty confident with it right now. I've been studying Italian for a couple of years now, and just started studying German. I have about 2 years left before I will go to OPT, do you think that 2 years of German is sufficient enough to be able to intern at BMW?

I have had multiple people tell me that college degrees are magic pieces of paper. In many cases it doesn't really matter what your degree is in but just having one shows that you have the general skills and knowledge to work at a large percentage of jobs out there.

This is true. A college diploma can get you to an unlocked door, but it's up to you to turn the knob.

BS International business, minor in German & economics......... Currently a project manager in commercial construction.

                        Girl: BS logistics

Looking back I'm not sure if I'd go to college. We live well beneath our means and the amount of debt associated with the degree makes one wonder

                          Yeah it does.

Colleges are ridiculous now. The amount of mandatory fees I've had to pay for shit I've never used is unbelievavle. There was literally a thousand dollar a semester fee at my old college for services I probably only used once. And most of the services are provided by students doing community service hours from getting in trouble in the dorms. Ask me how I know.

Complete bullshit. Books too. College is like the new organized crime.

What's your first language? And OPT?

It really depends on how much you applied yourself in your German classes, and how hard your teacher pushed. I had three years of college german when I came over in which I never got less than an A- (sounds more impressive than it was, most of my teachers were eaaaaaasy graders. I wish they had been stricter).

I barely function here as an intern. I get about 40-50% of conversations depending greatly on whether the person is speaking slowly to me or fast to someone else and on the depth of the convo ("where are you from oh ive been to colorado i love skiing" conversations are a loooot easier to understand than technical analysis work).

My experience has been that unless you understand perfectly the first time at their normal speaking pace, they will instantly switch to english (or even if you have a momentary pause to think/translate). This is helpful to get the point across but does absolutely nothing to help you learn to speak and function effectively.

Unless you are very confident in your skills, and have had speaking practice.....good luck, trust me you'll need it.

That said, it's great to work here even with the language barrier. If the language bit intimidates you there are always internships at the Spartanburg plant which pay a good deal more and are in English.

I alread talked to the Spartanburg people, and I think they also require German. Probably it isn't as important tho, but I started studying anyway.

My first language is Hungarian. I came to the states 4 years ago, so believe me, I know what language barrier is:) I'm an EU citizen, so I can't legally work in the US, but I can do 1 year of CPT (internship during my college years), and 1 year OPT (Optional Practical Training, after graduation), so either way, I will end up in EU, that's why it would be nice to go to Germany as an Intern. I will just keep on studying German, hopefully I'll be alright with it by the time I graduate. The best way to learn a language is to live in the country tho, I picked up English in about 7 months after arriving, having almost zero knowledge before.

me: highschool drop out, no college. i'm a project coordinator/ supervisor for a large scale construction company.

the wife: did 2-3 years of college but never could figure out what she wanted to get a degree in. she's an office manager, does all the book keeping, accounts receivable/ payable, aia's, and what ever other contracts need to be done.
