    Blown Motor VW Carnage

I had an 88 Jetta that threw a rod. Here are some of the pictures:

    Front of motor

Back of motor. Can't really tell, but there is a hole about the size of a grapefruit blown out behind that cover. You can see how much it is dented though. It used to be flat.

Oil filter was in front of the hole. It actually pierced the can in two places.

Had to pull the oilpan before the yard would take it. This is what I found:

Destroyed the oil pump as well and left about a hand full of small pieces. The bottom of the piston was completely destroyed and all I could find was peanut sized pieces of the wristpin. I found the rod cap the day it blew on the ground along with a bunch of other small pieces of block.

Last picture before we left for the junkyard:

And the best part. $112.50 check.

Oh, and a video of it being crushed:

Funny you say that, there were two guys at the scrap yard when I was there turning in a bucket full of aluminum to buy beer with.

You're supposed to put oil in those things.
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

That wasn't the problem. A few weeks before this happened, in a bad rainstorm, the engine got flooded and hydrolocked. I drained the oil, changed the air filter etc... and all seemed fine other than what sounded like valvetrain noise. Well, that noise was rod knock and 2 weeks later, it was dead.

I had an 83 GTi that blew a rod in the same spot. But it knocked off the oil filter.. The mounting bracket and the oilfilter were just hanging there by the wire that goes off the top of the filter bracket. lol
