need help building a new computer

looking to build a new computer, completely ignorant when it comes to this stuff, only thing i wont need is the monitor and mouse/keyboard and speakers and shit, looking at some packages from comp USA email, and seemed pretty decent for like 300-400 bucks, any one know a setup with that budget? I work construction and dont really have time to do a ton of research, but im trying. thanks

go to tomshardware ...they do various budget builds with specific recommendations on components etc

if you aren't building a box for gaming or media center or something specific and it sounds like you don't even have extra time to research it, then buy a prebuilt box.

yeah, i definitely want something better then mine right now, i cant even play some of the games i bought last year on it, no serious gaming just screwing around, i was going to upgrade my video card, but i still have a PCI board and i know thats pretty ancient, i would also like something that can play movies and has a seperate video card from the motherboard so the graphics are a lot better, i do occassionally make slideshows, and put them on DVD, but thats as far as my media center capabilities need

Honestly, I would just go with a Dell or Gateway or other big brand. You can get a great computer for relatively cheap that includes great customer support and a warranty. You really can't go wrong.

Get a Dell, they have deals all the time you can get one with a 24 inch LCD for less than 500. Just do a little shopping, computers are pretty cheap I gave up on building my own for cost savings a few years ago because for basic computers you can't beat these companies that are building thousands everyday. I just purchased a Gateway laptop, 4 GBs memory, huge widescreen bunch of other junk I don't care about because all I do is watch youtube or netflix and type up papers, it was 400 dollars.

Yeh a dell or something is your best bet.

But if you can spare a few hours reading up on building your own computer its worth it, and really not that hard anymore. It really is just about idiot proof these days you can't change mother board voltages with switches you can't accedently put the ram in the wrong way or the video card in the wrong slot. The only thing you can really stuff up is if you place the cpu in socket incorrectly and then try to lock it.

But its up to you. If you do go down the path of building your own my self and i am shore plenty of others would be glad to help and guide you.

I've built two rigs now, my latest is a C2D Wolfdale E6700 @ 3.16, Gigabyte PCI-E DDR3 Mobo, and a nVIDIA GeForce 260 with 4gB of Corsair DDR3 1600 RAM. I'm gonna OC the CPU to a 1600 mHz FSB when I get my Zalman cooler LGA775 bracket... I lost it when I put the Zalman on my 939 AMD board.

I helped someone else on here...if you want me to research you good parts (give me a budget) I'll find the best build for your money and tell you how much more you can upgrade too if you spend more money and what the effects will be. PM me if interested.

                My current specs:

                Intel i7 920 OC'd to 3.4ghz without water cooling
                EVGA GTX 295
3GB of ram (triple channel ram is too expensive for me to go higher right now)
                2 500gb harddrives in RAID
                700watt powersupply

                SC*AR (Schwarz Army)
No longer stock ride height, rolling as low as a daily driver in New England should without worrying about breaking an oil pan.

I would recommend anything from the P5Q line from Asus, I have used a lot of variations of that board and have been very impressed.

Ram www.corsair.com and search for it based upon your mobo

CPU whatever you can afford, I would get a core2duo with a l2cache of 3+mb.

HD get a WD as big as you can afford 32mb cache would be preferable

Case whatever you find pretty. I like coolermasters centurion 5

PSU don't cheap out and get something shitty that will blow up and take your machine down. http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx
