Definitely go through I-40. The drive is long and flat for much of the trip (through Texas, etc.) but is really fun through northern AZ and parts of New Mexico. There's still a chance you could get hit by weather though as you drive through those parts. AZ has been exceptionally dry this winter, but be prepared for colder temps.

I saw it parked on the side of the road in downtown Flagstaff, AZ (relevence to thread??) and thought it was cool. Knew next to nothing about BMW bikes at the time, had no idea what I was taking a picture of. Sadly, therefore, it is not mine.
