I was just trying to buy an early model air dam and have it shipped from Florida to West Virginia, and I was quoted that shipping would be $125 UPS ground. How can I ship an automatic transmission, 114lbs and in a box large enough for 4 air dams to fit in, from WV to NY with $200.00 worth of insurance, UPS ground for $84? This doesn't sound right, but I was told that I could ask anyone on here and that I would get the same $125 shipping quote. What does everyone think?

thats a big piece by the time you get it packaged properly. try fedex and have it sent to a business. i send large body panels and 02 trunk floors all over the USA and it isnt cheap. yesterday i sent a trunk floor from minnesota to NY and it was 133.00.to a business. light bulky stuff isnt as cheap as youd think but of course there are break points you can try to stay under. 60 inches is one -

Let Mr SEdgell get his own quote. All he needs is weight and box dimensions and your zip code and he can get a call tag generated. I know that Packaging something is not free and that is for U two to work out and then the buyer knows for sure he is not getting poked.Comment

Did the seller ever say that they quoted him a higher rate because it was breakable?
It's called dimensional weight, and this shit comes up over and over again.
All shipping companies use the same basic formula, and they all know each others rates and adjust their rates accordingly so they are competitive.
Basically, all of the vehicles used to ship something have a weight limit and a maximum size capacity. UPS and Fedex spend $$$$ each year trying to maximize the efficient use of these.
What it boils down to is that once you get into a really large package- such as an airdam- you get hammered with oversize fees which make it REALLY pricey.
You can't tell me that the box you used to ship a tranny in was big enough for a front airdam, unless it was cut/folded in half.
So, either suck it up and pay the $$$, or arrange the shipping yourself.
FWIW, every time this comes up, some mo-ron says "I shipped a wing off a B52 from Seattle to Boca Raton Fl and they only charged me $12.19". UPS and FEDEX will both allow you to enter the weight and dimensions of the package if you do the online shipping label, but they are supposed to check the weight and dimensions when you drop it off if you're paying for it at a shipping store, OR they will confirm them somewhere along the way if you are billing it to your account or a credit card and they WILL charge you for the actual weight and size of the package, no matter what you say it is.Comment

Shipping cost
I shipped my s52, tranny, UUC clutch kit (including flywheel), hydrolic jack in a 3'x3'x3' wooden box plus another cardboard box(Uhaul wardrobe box) full of my personal stuff across the world (From US to Kuala Lumpur) for US $140.00
ohh forgot to tell my GC suspension kit was also in there.
Just rcvd the 2 boxes 3 days ago
I know this is a bit off topic, but it shows that it's gotten way too expensive to send something within the US.

Here's a common formula used in domestic and international air freight to calculate dimensional weight:
Length x Width x Height (all in inches) / 166
I don't have the measurements of your air dam, but I'd estimate that once it is packaged you are probably sitting somewhere around 70x20x12. Dimensional weight on that equivalent to shipping 101.2 lbs even though it probably doesn't weigh 20lbs actual. The carrier always charges you on the greater of dimensional versus actual weight.
Hope that helps!Comment

Here is what I am gonna say about this:
The total cost is what you need to worry about.
$225 shipped for an early Sport airdam WITH fogs, all in good shape?
Decent deal, IMO. If you don't like it, pass!
Just that simple.
