The event you reference took place during the time of the first world war. No one alive back then is still around to tell their tale. So there's no way you could be talking with "people who lived in Turkey" during that time. In cases such as this, a study of history becomes important.

Considering every historian (whether European, American, Turkish, or Armenian) agrees that the Armenian genocide was national (rather than religious) in character, I'd be inclined to give credence to that view...no matter how persuasive one family friend's anecdote might be.
