A bigger hose doesn't do much. It's all about your lung capacity depending on how much smoke you can take, but basically what Ben explained is pretty much on the dot.
If you're trying to get bigger/thicker clouds, try some ice in the chamber or freeze the hose like Ben does. Another thing you can do is put the coal in the center of the bowl, but that will also make it burn faster. Don't make your foil holes too big either, use a needle.
Well thank you and Ben. I got about a good 20-30 seconds as well. I never actually put ice in the hookah or frozen the hoses before. Duly noted!
If you mist some water down the steam and some in the water chamber and put them in the freezer it will make your smoke much thicker. Also most single hoses, and some 2 and 3 hoses, have a little valve in the steam, if you take off the cover and place your finger over the whole it won't allow any air in and you will get pure smoke. Its pretty strong that way. If it doesn't have the valve just covering the other hoses will provide a similar effect.

I own 3, all three hose. Two are about 1 1/2 feet tall. Plastic bases (party proof), and one glass it is about 2 feet.
Do's and Don'ts:
A lot have been mentioned already. Small holes in the tin foil, putting coals in the middle burn faster, etc.
Clean your hookahs often! Before and after every use. Everything.
Ice? Yes.
Ball bearings? Yes, no need for people to plug a hose to create suction.
Filtered Water? Yes.
Diffuser (Normally a plastic item to diffuse the incoming air into small bubbles at end of stem in water.) Yes.
Buy quality shisha. I really like Fantasia. Different shisha burns differently, and different smoke will come from it. The dryer stuff obviously normally requires less heat and is used up quickly.
Buy quality hoses. Some you can run water through, some it will break down the glue inside. Pay attention to this.
Instant-lighting coals? Never, ever, ever. Buy quality large coals and do NOT place too many on the bowl. A gas stove or torch works well to light them. Place them on the very edge sides of the bowl. Rotate them, remove if it is going to sit without being used.
Fluff the bowl and do not overfill. I generally do 1/2 to 3/4 of the bowl. If you have a small space between the shisha and tin fowl you won't waste really any shisha. If you overfill it will burn away the top layer quickly if your coals sit too long. Remember you heat the bowl to smolder the shisha, you don't want to simply burn through it all and make people gag because they are smoking ash.
If you want to tone down a fruity flavor, crush up a mint and put it into the water. I dislike mint after having it a lot in my youth (too much like a menthol) but the mint gives a cool and refreshing taste to the flavor.
Red wine in the base? Some times. Hard alcohol I've never been a fan of, to me it's stupid. A cheap wine? Sure, try it. To simply create a light headed feeling from alcohol being inhaled when you can consume it the right way? Come on.

Good points. I know as far as on mine the bearing valve will close enough for you to inhale, but placing the finger on top just gives it so much more smoke. But again mine is a small and semi cheap hookah, for my birthday I will be upping to a 24 or 26in. Also if done with hard liquor it will give you a good buzz, and you can mix it with water so you don't waste a lot. I tried it last night and it was fun and gave me a better buzz over the water. Also added the great taste of jager to the smoke and that alone is almost reason enough for me to keep adding it. I wouldn't but anything for the soul purpose of putting in place of the water, but already having it layen around it was fun to try.
Oh fun trick I forgot to mention. Take a bottle and cut it in half, keep the top half (part with the mouth hole) toss the bottom half. Take a small dish and mix some water and dish soap. Now place the bottle with the cut side in the soap water and the mouth part up away from the soap water. Inhale your hookah, the bigger the better. Now take the bottle out of the water and blow through the mouth hole. A bubble will start to form, blow in and even steady, but not to hard pace. When its big enough or your out of breath pull the bottle upwards quickly. You will have a bubble full of smoke that will float gently to the ground and pop, when it pops the smoke will kinda do a puffy thing. Its a fun little trick to do at parties.
Also you can make a defuser by using a hotel shampoo bottle and punching a bunch of evenly placed holes in it.

hahaha tobacco smoke? youre the pansy if youre getting high off of a hookah.
would be if I used enought to be worth drinking. it was maybe a shot mixed in with water. and he didn't say high, he said buzzed. and if your breathing in smoke then your not breathing in fresh air, so you should be getting some buzz even if its from the lack of o2

I've smoked nargile quite a bit in Istanbul. But I can't stand the crap they sell in the US and Canada. Cheap-ass tobacco that's sticky sweet with artificial aroma/flavor. Nasty, toxic charcoal briquettes. Yuck.
The places we go to in Tophane serve pure tobacco without any smelly shit in it. And they use genuine, home-made charcoal. Totally different experience.
The point is that you're supposed to be smoking 100% pure Turkish or Balkan tobacco without any additives. And the nargile itself not only filters the smoke a bit, but also (and more importantly) cools it and concentrates it. So, you get a very powerful, very clean smoke. You can inhale deeply and it won't burn your lungs, dry your throat, or make you cough. It doesn't even stink up your breath, hair, or clothes.
All in all, it's the perfect way to smoke tobacco
But then I've never understood the point of ingesting damaging substances that aren't going to at least give me a buzz.
If you're not getting a buzz from smoking a nargile, then you're clearly doing it wrong. We're talking about a huge amount of tobacco that you're inhaling deeply into your lungs. Think about smoking an entire pack of unfiltered cigarettes (with zero waste) in the space of an hour. It'll definitely get a light buzz going.

I'm looking into seeing if I can grow some of my own tobacco next year. I've got the room and a place to dry it, also I'm in kentucky so it will grow fine. I would like to try homemade charcoal. it seems like it would be much better then the stuff we can buy.

Well, he's catholic, his sister is quite a looker, and he totally thinks his parents "raised her to be a good christian girl, and she wouldn't do anything like that" yet she has banged on his bed (he refuses to believe me when I heard boots knocking at 3am in his room, next to mine) and, well, the brown eye is not a "No-Fly" zone, according to her boyfriend.
