    career choices:

Alright let me start by this, i am currently enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technologist program at Nait(college). First year, i am doing really good in everything, but Statics. i just can't get it, i am having a hard time even with the basic stuff. we have a midterm tomorrow and i really don't know anything. and i didn't get a good mark when i did my fist midterm. i didn't pass it...the problem is that if we're gonna go further in statics, which we will probably do (dynamics, and stress)...i don't see my self going any where with this. i was thinking about switching programs... my dad( Senior Chemical Engineer) told me to go for either instrumentation or Constuction Engineering...which i did some reaserch on and had nothing to do with Static and i am really happy about it. i just don't see my self enjoying doing something for the next 20 to 30 years from now...it really feels bad when your average for everything is more than 70% and you fail one course which is statics.

what do you guys think about construction, or instrumentation engineering technology programs?

i just don't wanna deal with statics, dynamics or any of that crap at all...i was even thinking about going to petroleum engineering untill my dad told me it's worse than MEC lol.

    rant/ lol :(

it's almost 10pm right now and i don't even know if i should study for the midterm tomorrow....

How old are you? I am still having this dilemma. I think I really have figured it out and I'm going to go to school for Electrical Engineering. It's a great field and there are so many job opportunities opening up and being developed lately.

Well tell us what would be your dream job and maybe we can go on from there.... (something that you would see yourself doing till your retire)

Cant say much because I'm studying mech engineering to get a lead fab job on a race team or something along those lines.....

            20.

i hate electricity hahah...omg dealing with circuits and stuff like that is a nightmare lol.

i don't really know, i really enjoy our macine tools class.

for Edmonton, i think Constuction is the way to go. it's a growing area, and jobs for that career is still avaliable.

i want somthing that you really would enjoy doing for the +30 years or so from now...not being on the computer or sitting in an office for 24/7...i wanna be able to get my hands dirty and jump on the field...with my co-workers but not always be outside and become a greasmonkey lol.

Omg i am just reading about it right now, and you're right.

                we have Statics(mechanic 1). FML. :(

and 11 courses every semster lol....this is worse than freakin MEC.

im a mec eng. *warning, harsh reality follow*

if you dont get statics, you're pretty much in the wrong field. it's one of the easier courses in mech eng, and it's also the base for a whole branch of courses. understanding forces and how they act on bodies is the bread and butter of a mech eng. if this seems completely uninteresting or too complicated, i would look elsewhere for your career choice.

how good is your math? how well do you really understand calculus? if your math isnt very good (mine wasnt going in to my bac) you will struggle. problems and exams that are easy will stump you because the math is too hard to get through. i've always hated pure math (probably bc im not good at it) but i forced myself to go back and relearn calculus for real. this helped tremendously with all my engineering. you dont have to like math to be a good engineer (except electrical) but you still have to use it and rely on it like a construction worker with his hammer.

fast forward to the real engineering job world > you will probably get around without knowing too much of what you learned in school. hell most engineers dont use any of it because they end up managing or planning or anything else that requires little true engineering skill. so assuming you sneek your way through school, you can hope for this type of non technical job if that would make you happy.

if you want to be hands on and not in front of a computer, you are pretty much out of luck as an engineer. the only ones who get their hands dirty are in small companies or work out of the city. building/construction may be the exception to that in some cases (work site supervision). it is also pretty much the easiest engineering. but then again, if you cant handle statics, you will struggle.

have you considered a tech? that is much more hands on, and you get to skip all the dreaded theory.

lol i agree with you about boring.

mechanical is really good..it's just the stupid static, Stress, and dynamics.

frick i don't be stuck in school for 3 years were i could finish it in 2 years if i pass statics.

i am doing the Mechanical Engineering Tech. i am just getting a diploma in this after all.

my math is ok. i think my average in Calculs is around 71% or somthing. just easy stuff that we learned in highschool so far.

as for Statics, i understand the math. and know how to draw a free body diagram of the subject. the thing i don't get is when to take a moment and when you take forces at the X-axis or the Y-axis. so confusing. maybe if i payed attention in the begging i would have not been in this situation.

i have 8 courses right now, like if i concentrate on jus statics, that means i am gonna ignore my other 7 courses and end up failing all of these. also i really hate the instructor for Drafting/Cad. he's some guy that can't even speak proper engilsh and it's hard to understand whatever he says in class.

BTW you think Consruction Engineering is the easiset? they have 11 course/semster and it's all Satatic/Dynamics the same B.S. which i really hate.

what you think about Insrumentation Engineering?
