Yeah what exactly is a clean install?

I just got my HP win 7 upgrade today, can someone hook up a computer idiot with some help on what I need to do. What is a clean install?

I would suggest booting from the cd and doing a full install. Upgrades are for dummies.

I just bought Windows 7 to put on my HP to upgrade from Vista.
I throw it in my computer and I'm running the install and it sits on the first step: Checking for Compatability.
After a few minutes it exits the install and takes me back to the main screen, or exits the installer all together.
Now, I know my computer is compatible but what is the problem? Has anyone else run into this?
