I feel you. This past summer playing pick-up hockey I managed to fall awkwardly knee first into the boards at full tilt. My knee was bent all the way back and it caused microtearing in my patella tendon. I then went on the play another 2 hours after that. Couldn't walk for a week after that, now rocking a compression sleeve holding my patella in place. And now my other (right) knee is acting up from picking up the slack of my left knee. Spent 2k + on physio so far, much better but still not at the point that I want. Physiotherapist says I'll have pain for at least another year if I continue as I'm doing (playing a bit of pick-up hockey and lots of biking). Also limits my ability to work (class 8 trucks, lots of dead lifts with legs, crawling under tractor/trailers, etc). Good luck, knees are no joke.

I'm only 22 and have the same problem. I find that if I ever have to kneel, it's more comfortable for me to have one knee on the ground and the opposite leg's foot on the ground, if that makes sense. Instead of both knees on the ground, I have one foot and one knee.
I used to lift weights heavily so I'm thinking that might be the reason. It probably doesn't help that I stopped lifting weights a few years ago.
Only thing I can think of would be to do some swimming and maybe light squats.
Like someone else said, it's probably best to see a professional.
