    F-u kidney stone

Woke up yesterday with some pain in the lower back, thought maybe I pulled my back or something. When I started to sweat and pissing blood I knew something was up. Drove myself to ER, 3 hours waiting, then another 3 for discharge and I have this...

Right kidney: There is a 5 mm calculus at the ureteropelvic
junction on the right without hydronephrosis. The right ureter
is decompressed. No additional calculi in the ureter. No
recently passed stones in the bladder or upper urethra. No
perinephric fluid surrounding the right kidney. No gross mass
identified on this very limited scan.

So I am taking some pain killers and something else to help it pass, but i have no idea how long it's going to take. thinking maybe need to find a doctor or specialist to break the stone down into smaller pieces or something via ultrasound?

Not looking forward to any of this . FML

Sorry man! I'm afraid - what can someone do to prevent kidney stones?

BTW - that kidney stone, it hit the tire. :)

              • have a family history of kidney stones
              • are aged between 20 and 50
              • are taking certain medicines - for example indinavir (in the treatment of HIV infection) and taking too many laxatives or taking them too often
              • have only one kidney, or an abnormally shaped kidney
              • eat a diet high in protein
              • don't drink enough fluids
              tasty

Study: Eating fresh fruits may reduce the risk of kidney stones

September 23, 2009 by Personal Liberty News Desk

According to new research, those whose diet is rich in fruits and vegetables may end up with healthier kidneys and lower their risk of developing kidney stones.

A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms from the crystallization of excreted substances in the urine. The condition, which affects more than 1 million Americans, is particularly painful if the stone breaks loose and travels down the urinary tract.

For their study, scientists from Maine Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston assigned a score to each enrolled participant based on eight components of a DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) style diet.

The diet—which is based on fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, low-fat dairy products and whole grains and is low in salt, sweetened beverages as well as red and processed meats—is designed to boost the levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium, oxalate and vitamin C in the body.

Compared with those with the lowest DASH scores, participants with the highest scores experienced between 40 percent and 45 percent reduction in the likelihood of developing kidney stones, the scientists found.

ahh that sucks... I had one when I was 15. It was terrible terrible times. Not to mention that the pain would randomly strike when i was done pooping and about to wipe... You just feel like rolling into the shower and just laying in there with the water on to clean yourself. Gah terrible memories. btw the surgery for it was alright, they went up there(through the goods) and shot lasers at it. I was numb down there for a few days.

Yes but not some fruits. Strawberry if i remember right are no good. These suck, I have had them 6 or 7 times in my life. One time they put me in a hot tub and shocked the shit out of me. They knock you out for this. Other than that, time and lots of water. I usually roll around on the ground for a few hours until I can't take it any longer. Then I go in for the morphine shot. pass the stone a few hours later and say thanks and see you in s few years.

sorry to hear about the kidney stone! I had a small one over the summer that I was able to break down into sediment drinking water and gatorade, granted I was drinking 5-6 gallons a day due to my severe dehydration that resulted due to the stone and other factors.

                        it is no fun.

I've had patients with ureter stones. If it's unable to pass, you may have to undergo ultrasonic lithotripsy in order to break the stone into smaller pieces.... and you'll need to start straining your urine which is fun ;)
