    Stupid Key

OK, I just broke the new key into the lock that I got a week ago, which means I can't open my car. The old half-way-through broken key that I kept as a spare is in the glove box. The BMW dealer would order me another one for $50 that would arrive on Friday, when I'll be on an airplane flying to Europe.
I'll be back in the end of January, when I'll have the choice: do I want to pay $50 for a key, or do I want to smash my driver side window for which I already have a replacement because I was planning on replacing it for a while?
The second solution sounds convenient, but to replace the window I need to be able to roll it up and down, which I can't do because the window motor is broken.
So when I get back in January I have to smash my window, drive around without it until I get a window motor, then replace the motor, and then the window. And I will have a key from the glove box that's half-way broken.
Or I can order the key from the dealer when I get back, wait 3 days for it, then try to get into my car. The right lock doesn't open with a key, the driver's door's lock has the previous key broken in it, and by then the battery will be dead so the central locking wont work from the trunk's lock. Well I can try to get the broken piece out with a magnet, or charge the battery and then use the central lock. And my window still won't be able to move in this case.

OK I know this is not a big deal but I'm in the middle of finals and I'm frustrated. I want things to work properly, but they don't...

Pay for the key. Ask yourself is $50 worth you time and misery waiting for a motor and driving around in January weather until you find the time parts and motivation to fix the window?

On another note, are there any real lock smiths in your area? When I broke a key it took my local guy 20 minutes to get it out and make me a new one. BTW the blank is an Ilco BMW2 or BMW3 (bigger top, same blade as the BMW2)

That's what I'll do probably. And there is also the possibility to just call a locksmith to do the work for me and pay him $100-200 when everything is good, but I'll rather suffer through days than give in and let someone else who is more qualified do the job instead of me.

The window is chipped in a few places on its edge from someone trying to break in, and I already have a replacement window waiting to go in.

Actually I talked to a locksmith who said he can replace the locks, or get the piece out from the current one, but he can't copy a broken key. Also, the problem is that the key I bought the car with was already a copy, and it broke, but after about 3 tries somewhere I got a copy of it because it wasn't completely sparated. Now that key is in the glove box.

Oh the problem with the locksmith copies is that they use softer material blanks to protect their machinery, the dealer key should be used so it won't break...

Then I'll still have a broken key which a locksmith might or might not be able to copy, and even if he can it will be weak and might last a week like the previous one did.
So then I should order one from the dealer, but then I could just order it in the first place.
So that's the verdict guys, official key order it is! thx. Now I can focus on my next final:)

Not sure if i'm right about this or not... When I first got my car 3 years ago I was fucking with the cap on the door panel and noticed an Allen wrench (from the trunk tool kit) fit in there. I said hmm must be used as a manual crank when/if the motor goes bad. So if I were you, I'd break the window, replace the window, then manually roll it up. If that doesn't work... My bad. I really don't know why else that cap would be there...

you do realize that you can manually roll down the window motor using an allen wrench right??? That solves that problem. What it doesn't solve is the broken key in the lock.

Thanks Yakinho and TexasTerp, that sounds like something BMW engineers would think of:)
I'll check it out, that would save me a lot of trouble.
I don't remember the Bentley mentioning this, I must've missed it.
