So if you put a file in there from your desktop in the morning, it will be on your laptop or phone or whatever later in the day, even if you pull it out and you are not connected to the internet at the time. Where if you had just uploaded it to your server and pulled your laptop or phone out later and had no interweb connection, you'd be screwed because you can't get to it right then. What client do you use on your phone BTW?

And I'm positive that GG understands what you are saying. But there are limitations to using an FTP client (on top of what I said earlier). You might want to listen to music or watch videos while you're at school on your phone. Rather than syncing your phone to add/change your movies or music (most people's music/video libraries exceed their phone's capacity), you can just drop whatever you want in to the folder and it'll be there on your phone later when you want it.

I also use it to easily share media with my family. I've set up a folder that my parents, siblings, in-laws, family friends, extended family etc. all use. Rather than teaching them all how to use an FTP client to upload shit to my server, I just set them up so there are sub folders for pictures, videos, documents, specific people, etc. and they can just drag and drop shit in there to share with everyone else. Way easier than emailing pictures, or relying on some online host or facebook or whatever.

Shit like that makes it useful. And it's free to an extent, so there's no need to be a hater for the sake of being a hater. Many of us have our own server, it does not make you special.
Agree 100%, especially with the bolded part. I set up dropbox on my parent's computers and now they "automagically" get new pictures of the girls in a folder on their desktop every once in a while. Ever tried teaching 60+ year old people how to ftp? How about sending them 3m pictures and trying to explain to them how to save them in a folder from their crappy web-based email? With dropbox I do all the "hard" work and they just open the folder.

I do agree that stuff still has to be downloaded, but it's set to do it automatically in a very familiar GUI versus nerdware like Filezilla. I can use both, but dropbox is vastly superior for file sharing.

Drop Box is awesome. I'm using it with my clients right now until I finish a local solution so they can upload files to me.

                FTP servers, drop box, whatever.

I use VPN (keeps my data away from prying eyes) and AFP or SMB. Not only can I access my files, but I can VNC, RDP and review security camera footage from Sweden (I tried it there), Nürburg (tried it there, too), Regensburg (same deal), or my back deck.

I have a link on my desktop that I can open, and bam. files. wow.

Also works through my cell phone.

Still have to download them on VPN. I have a VPN at work and every time I want to pull down 40mbs of PDF's to have a local copy it takes 10 minutes via VPN. Dropbox is instant assuming you stay connected to the 'net.

No i don't. I can run them in real time.

And 10 minutes to copy 40 MB? That's slow.

^That's great nerd. :) But the rest of us that don't want to do all that work to set that all up - this is the way to go.

Plus, I don't know about you guys but when ever I try to FTP over something like wi-fi, the smallest drop in the connection and the file aborts.

How are you FTP'ing large files and always getting them up reliably?

You can run them in real-time. Try attaching them to an email in your local copy of Outlook and get back to me. We keep files on a corporate HD and to get them attached to an outgoing email you need to...wait for it...download them. I routinely make a copy of the corporate HD on my work laptop just so I can quickly access and email files. It takes about an hour to copypasta the entire thing.

Also, the 10 minutes was a slight exaggeration, but it's probably at least two-three minutes over my home network.

Most mailservers will reject 40MB emails.

That's right. I am a huge nerd. It's where my monies come from.

FTP has this awesome feature built into it called resume. Pre-dates HTTP download managers, by, oh, 15+ years?

Biggest thing I've ever FTP'd was around 12GB (by the way, I prefer to tunnel my FTP via SSH).

^Hmm. Well, tell that to Dreamweaver. CuteFTP, and WSFTP, ect.

My point is that you seem to miss, is that you don't need to be an "IT' guy to get this stuff working. That's great for you that you have your 133t skills. But for the rest of us that just wants something that just works ALL THE TIME and is EASY. Why are you even arguing about this?

Here's that link again for anyone that wants an extra 250MB on a new 2 gig account.
